Is a team trading for Dubois going to be expecting to win the Cup in the next couple years? Here’s what Pierre LeBrun had to say in the Athletic about the Dubois and Laine situations:
Quote:
The fly in the ointment, of course, is that if you’re either club you’d want to make sure the other player in question is interested in a long-term commitment to your organization before going that route. Would Dubois want to play in Winnipeg? Laine in Columbus? Maybe, but you need to find out.
|
A couple NHL executives he quoted said these kinds of deals are tough to make because the landing spots are limited. The player and his agent have a lot of power here.

In 2 years Dubois is still RFA so he could be traded for assets. The new team gets 2 years to sell him on staying. It is not like trading for a pending UFA

And Laine is a RFA after his contract is up and can be traded for assets.

David Pagnotta @TheFourthPeriod
The Carolina Hurricanes are still very much interested in Patrik Laine, I'm told. The asking price remains an issue, though, as the Winnipeg Jets seem to want Pesce & Necas in a deal and so far Carolina has balked.

Is Pesce really good? Seems like a fair base to me.

I think Carolina is also very high on Necas. That being said I would make that trade if I were them. Teravainen-Aho-Laine for the next x years sounds disgusting

Add in Svechnikov and you have 4 elite forwards

Yeah, Necas is good but a downgrade from Laine for sure. If Pesce was a top 2 D then I could see the hesitation for sure. Top-4 and I think it is pretty fair.

3 of whom have a legit argument to be better than any of our forwards.

Only one I would even consider trading Tkachuk for is Aho. Not sure who the other 2 are?

I love Tkachuk but I would trade him one for one for either of Svechnikov or Aho.

Svechnikov looks ready to pop and become one of the top 3 or 4 LW in the league. Which is why pursuing Laine is a bit of a head scratcher. Would the Canes really bump Svechnikov to the 2nd line to play with Trocheck?

I love the way the Hurricanes have made their team.
They just need good goaltending.
Columbus and Carolina tend to have troubles keeping players around.
If Laine wants out of Winnipeg, I don't think it makes much sense for Columbus/Carolina to acquire a player who isn't loyal to his team.
If Dubois is to be traded, I'm sure he'll manage to get a decent package. Columbus tends to win these trades, at least in recent years.
At both Dubois and Laine still offer the teams control upon the expiration of the contracts.

The other two would be Svechnikov and Laine. I wouldnt trade Tkachuk for Laine but I think you could make an argument that Laine is better depending on how next season goes. Svech looked dominant at times last season and finished with a better PPG than chucky.

I agree they are both very good players but I wouldn’t trade Chucky for either myself. Points per game don’t do Tkachuk enough justice. While he is elite offensively his physicality, intangibles, and leadership are worth more to me.
You could make the argument I just wouldn’t buy it.

Wtf. You don't trade a Tkchuck for an Aho unless you have another Tkachuk and need an Aho. Stop putting trades in vacuums! You need both a Tkachuck and an Aho in order to win, trading one for another without still having both when you're done is like selling your hair to buy a brush.

Teravainen, Aho, Laine, Svechnikov > Gaudreau, Monahan, Tkachuk, Lindholm
maybe - they certainly have more upside, as they are younger.
But to suggest that they are all better than any of the Flames is just silly. I am amazed that the Flames win any games at all, considering how awful our top players apparently are!

Wonder if they wouldn't just stack the top line with Svech, Aho, Laine. Would presume Teravainen would maybe be in the deal to the Jets anyway?
