Flames announce Scotiabank as the official helmet sponsor for the 2020-21 season
https://twitter.com/user/status/1346150115417886720
Like most of the other teams who have announced helmet sponsors so far, the Flames are putting their arena sponsor's logo on the helmets this season.

Well, it looks cheap and horrible but I understand it. At least it’s not a giant blue logo like the Devils are using.

I would love to know how much this cost Scotiabank. Like $25K for the season, $100k, $500k, etc?

Probably nothing. My guess is arena sponsors on helmets are more of a make good on the part of the team.

I think the NHL was expecting 10-15 million for all of teams combined. Somewhere in the original thread on it.

Agreed. The logo's are much more tolerable than the ones with writing. For some reason having the arena sponsor on it bothers me less as well. Kind of ties in, having the arena logo on the helmet.

What? It was literally announced as a way to recoup some lost revenue. Also, I 'm not quite sure what a "make good on the part of the team" even means.

I think they should put a Ram truck right at centre ice and make it part of the game.

Ah so $300-$500K per team on average. More than I thought. Still funny in perspective, $300K is less less than 1/2 a league minimum salary (I guess excluding CBA clawback money)

My understanding is that Scotiabank (or whoever) pays X amount of dollars for so many guaranteed home games or TV dates. When those aren't provided, rather than refunding money, the NHL teams aren't charging money for helmet ads, instead giving up this season as a make good on money owed.
Found this, not sure it matches what I thought so my apologies if I was off

It actually sort of fits because it's the same sponsor as the Saddledome
Could be way worse

It's a lot more upbeat than the true meaning of "credit is cheap and we'll let you rack up insane levels of debt".

What I’ve heard on some podcasts is that helmet sponsors that already had many existing sponsorship deals with the team could be given the helmet slot as a make good on some unmet terms of the existing agreements. Aka, less games, no in arena fans, less team to fan marketing opportunities.
Scotiabank likely falls into this category considering their previous sponsorship presence. You’re not going to get more money out of SB when you haven’t provided anything for the regular sponsorship.
In some situations teams would be able to negotiate a fee from a helmet sponsor if existing sponsors opted out of negotiating for the helmet ad, or would already be covering the terms of their existing agreements. The final is should a team get a sponsor to stupidly agree to pay for it, then shut up and take the money.

Half a million per team is nothing. It's probably what, a few day's expenditure?
Also it will be interesting to see if the camera crew will now be "instructed" to do more close up shots on the helmets during the game....
