I remember when his contract was first announced. The TSN guys and frankly all of us thought it was a pretty big overpayment. But he definitely earned it in my opinion.

I remember this. People were laughing at us for signing him to 3 years on almost 3m per year. We as Flames fans didn’t care because we were rebuilding at the time, but I think that made our expectations awfully low. He was an instant favorite when we saw his leadership and standing up for our young guys.
I feel like we’ve lacked a great bottom pairing D that can throw hits and stick up for the teammates. Yes, we have some, but I don’t think to the extent of McGrattan or Engelland. Maybe Lucic, but only time will tell.

Seemed like a strange expansion pick. Ya, local LV guy and we appreciated him. But old at the time. Smart move in the end. It’s those early players in expansion team ‘s life that help with grassroots and building fans. Happy for the guy

I am sorry, but McGrattan was never good at anything beyond striking the fear of God into opposing players and then beating them up. He couldn't skate, was too slow to hit with any useful consistency, and couldn't carry or shoot the puck. Engelland could at least play NHL hockey.

I was mainly referring to sticking up for teammates.
Sounds perfect. Just the bigger body we needed on the back end. Not a great player, but he'll fill in just fine.

I also learned that I, as a 34 year old right handed person who is over 6 foot and 220 lbs. who has never played hockey in my life, have a good chance of being signed as a right handed defenseman for the league minimum because the demand is that high. I will gladly split my $575 K salary next year with anyone who can get me into game shape in time.

I never understood the uproar over his contract when it was signed. By all accounts he was well liked in Pittsburgh. Sure he wasn't the most skilled. But I think very quickly he proved it was money well-spent given the lack of toughness on our team at the time.
Fighting 2 Canucks at a time will go down in history as one of the best Flames' photos ever. Heck, that image might be a couple spots behind Lanny's cup photo for most iconic Flames' photo of all-time. What a boss.
Another kid I saw all the way from Jr to retirement. Fan favorite in the Jaw. Man I'm getting old. Another guy who worked his butt off and made a great career in the NHL. I still remember fondly when he finally got his break with the Pens after a long run in the E and A.

Retire in piece Engelland!
I remember at the time, I didn't know much of Engelland, but I thought we were signing the Pens 7th dman who sometimes played spot duty as a 4th line forward. Initially thinking '$3M over 3 years? Who cares', but then I was quickly corrected that it was $3M a year. I though BT was crazy, but it wasn't anything to get worked up about as the flames were in the midst of a rebuild and had cap room to spare.
I would have never have guessed that $3M ACV was going to be a fair contract for Engelland. Hell, turned out to be the best signing that summer as Raymond got bought out, and Hiller had a disaster second year (albeit, a pretty darn good first year).
