The only way the Oilers could keep him is if they low ball the hell out of him. Their cap Structure is a mess.

And I think they know it. But I dont see him being all that interested in taking a discount. Maybe because the NHL Salary landscape will change post-COVID?

I suspect there will be lot of players who are going to have to sign for less money than they were looking forward to. The cap is going to be flat for a couple years for sure, if not the entire CBA.

Has the Seattle boost already happened? Or will it not be enough to move the cap up?

I dont think the Cap can realistically go up. I think they're artificially maintaining it at its current level as it is.

This is my take as well. We don't even know if the NHL will have fans in stadiums for the 2021-22 season. My suspicion is the cap wont go up until 2022-23

I dont even know about that.
I think that season is just going to keep the Cap flat again to try and recoup losses.
The NHL is really taking this on the chin.

And he won't take it, he's moving into his first UFA deal, he doesn't need to sign a show me deal, he'll likely get a bump from playing with McPingpong. He's not going to accept a cut in pay or a stay the same deal, and some team will pay a bunch for him.
Is he a number one center, nope absolutely not, but he's a decent second line center who can win faceoffs.

Last season was the only season RNH was over 50% in faceoffs.

he's also been at 45 and 47, and is probably the best faceoff option for the Oilers in the defensive zone, especially as he has a rough idea of defensive responsibilities

Barrie will also be guaranteed a PP spot because new toy syndrome is strong there. If it ain't broke don't fix it, right? Well aside from magic beans running out they're going to look to fix it with a player they arguably never needed anyway since he's a PP guy and as a result could instead throw off PP to some extent.

I think technically they're still on the first rebuild because you know they haven't built anything.

The CBA has the cap flat until they not only get back to “normal” revenue, but also until they recoup losses from now until such time as they do. Revenue is going to be significantly under 50% of normal this coming year, it’s going to take some time to make that up, unless the US national broadcast deal is really good.

You're right.
They did a great job replacing Klefbom with a worse Klefbom.
I kept thinking that Barrie was a straight up add, but he's just half replacing a better player. So a net loss. Thanks for catching me on that.
