Backlund will not be getting exposed in the expansion draft barring something catastrophic. He might have played the best hockey I've ever seen a Flames center play from Feb-Mar of this year. Maybe some stretches from Conroy of 01-02 might have rivalled it, but I was too young to remember. Maybe Monahan of 18-19 had some good stretches too, but Backlund looked absolutely dominant on both ends of the ice which is a rare thing to say for a Flames pivot. The Tkachuk-Backlund combination is also too good to just throw away.

I wouldn’t get too bent out of shape of who to protect until we see how the season plays out. Maybe Backlund has a spectacular season and shuts down the other teams #1 line on route to the Flames winning the Stanley Cup.
Or not.

Backlund looked out of this world amazing for chunks of last season. I think he is consistently underrated by fans.
Plus he is a Flame through and through. You can see it on his face when we are playing a hated rival and he's in the thick of things or scores a big goal.
I would hate to lose him. He is exactly the kind of guy I would love to see hoisting the cup in a Flames sweater.

I am always amazed how fans over value their own players, I am guilty of this as well. So many untouchables for a team that has an atrocious playoff record

If we lose Backlund either through age or the expansion draft, this team will miss him immediately.
With that said, I think Backlund will age well relative to most. I don't expect him to conquer time, but he's a player who relies more on his IQ than anything else in his game. If he loses a step, he'll still be a very good hockey player.

Imagine where this team might be if it didn't make obvious mistakes that is forcing the team to waste cap space. Hard to blame one player on that.

I think every team has a few cap mistakes. If you don’t pay market value for free agents and just let them walk your team never gets better.
In my opinion the mistakes are from trading away too many draft picks. Centers don’t grow on trees.

Absolutely, you can add a 1st + two 2nds for Hamonic to the list.

That one hurt the most and definitely put us back the most. I bet Treliving has learnt from that one at least.
How he handles Gaudreau will be the most important part of this team going forward in terms of assets and value.

That Hamonic trade was insane, looking back, and yet I was over the moon over name recognition and hype at the time. Treviling got fixated on a decent defenseman whose value went through the roof only to western Canadian teams because he was a rare non-western Canadian team player that reportedly wanted to play here.
We ended up paying an all star rental or star top line forward signed price to get a decent stay at home defenseman. Yikes.

They could have easily blown the draft picks too

I hope that's further indictment on our franchise and not justification for the trade?

Is there a GM who hasn’t made ‘obvious mistakes’?

Not too many are paying as much for buyouts.

There's a big pile of real estate in between saying you should expose a player in an expansion draft and a player being untouchable.

okay....are you suggesting this is the reason why the Flames haven't been better? Is there a particular reason you are singling this out? Anahiem has more, as does Montreal, Pittsburgh has more dead cap between buyout and retained salary, Philadelphia has more, Minnesota has more than 2M in retained salary.....the list goes on. And it's likely only a matter of time before other teams bite the bullet as well. It is nothing unusual, all teams have dead cap space in one form or another at some point. This is the cost of doing business and aside from some egregious examples, it is hardly worth criticism.
there are 10 teams over the cap right now. What is Vancouver going to do? buyout Sven Bartschi? Put Ferland on LITR? I guess that makes them in a more enviable position?
The Flames are 14th in the league for their salary projection. I would say there cap management has been pretty good, all things considered.

okay, calm down and look at the original post I responded to. The only thing I'm saying is that you can't point to one player or one transaction or one play as the fault of a team. You can have really good players on really bad teams. The team isn't bad because of it's good players.

LOL at fans wanting to expose our best centre on the team. Comon! If anything he tradeable.
Gio i could get onboard with... Dont both players have NT/NM clauses...

I'd counter with:
"LOL at fans wanting to expose our best defenceman on the team. Comon! If anything he tradeable."
Both players have NTC. The Flames only have one NMC, and it belongs to Milan Lucic...except for of course that other one we have that we just gave out to that goalie guy (**thanks getbak**)

Markstrom has one now too (but it won't be an issue for the expansion draft).
