I think it would have been far better—great, actually—if a First Nations person was the one who designed and painted the mask. Having a white person design and paint a mask with elements like that is pretty cut-and-dried cultural appropriation.
I think paying tribute to local Indigenous culture on a goalie mask is a good idea and this design probably came out of good intentions. But to do it properly, let a First Nations artist design it.

I sort of thought the same but thought it was a misstep to call it “Canadian west coast” art/story.

It was a well-intentioned gesture... just poorly executed. Holtby came out and said he's going to try again with a new mask designed by a First Nations artist.
Nobody's getting cancelled. People pointed out the cultural appropriation, Holtby recognized he could have approached this better, and he's going to come out with a new mask. And he's being applauded for it because he handled it totally right.

Fair enough. I think Version 2 will look better too if its a little more authentic and not so flashy/daveartish.

My first thought when I saw it was wondering how long it would last before being called out for cultural appropriation. Personally, I don't think the ethnicity of the artist should matter, but it was bound to be criticized.

I think this article has decent depth on the subject. You can claim people are 'snowflakes' or whatever you want, but the first thing I thought when I saw it was 'that's not good'. I've played a lot of rugby in BC and two teams I've played for use First Nations logos. The logos were collaborations and actually given as gifts for use. Holtby seems to have been genuinely unaware and has handled it well, so that's great. But with the history being dealt with, yeah, maybe don't get the guy from Sweden to invent 1st Nations Cult-Approp. Totem TECH.

I don’t know why it’s now become a thing that artists are only allowed to interpret the world through their own narrow, ethnocentric slice of the human experience.
I actually think there’s something profoundly racist about that.
There is a way to treat material with respect, and there is a way to treat material disrespectfully.
The Vancouver Canucks and Seattle Seahawks both incorporate (or exploit, if you really prefer) the Pacific Northwest First Nations artwork into their logos. This isn’t new, it isn’t controversial, because they’re both done respectfully.
Whatever is wrong with the world, and whatever you think of his aesthetic style, DaveArt putting a thunder bird on the top of a goalie mask is not some some grand colonial cultural appropriation.
It’s the helmet for the Canucks starter.

And of course he had to publicly apologize to everyone he offended. And refer to his learning experience and hopes to become a better person.

And if you think about it much of the Indigenous People of North America art is copied from the cave paintings discovered in Africa. Remember, we all immigrated from somewhere.

Well, that site's credibility is obviously gone by the time you finish reading it's name.
The argument that it fails because Holtby wanted to represent the Vancouver area indigenous culture yet the design isn't based on Coast Salish designs is fair though. If the artist had studied the subject matter thoroughly and painted something that was a good representation, would his ethnicity still be relevant?

Agreed, and I’m fairly certain the Canucks orca logo wasn’t done by a Haida or west coast native. The mask is cool and had good intentions. When I saw it I thought, the only way it could be better is if a Native artist had done it. And it sounds like that will now happen. I look forward to seeing it. Will Daveart still paint it though?

Holtby should have to build another Indigenous themed building at UBC for the tenured academics to gather in cushioned chairs and think about who else to cut down for well intentioned projects.

I don’t think the outrage over that mask is justified or correct. It’s just a mask.

I think calling the reaction "outrage" is a bit much. The strongest reactions I've seen have actually been to the supposed outrage that caused Holtby to reconsider the mask.

Help, save, whatever.

When I saw the headline in the news for this article my mind went to the old TV show and I was excited to see the mask and why it was banned. Turns out it's just the old cultural appropriation trope. The mask looked great.
Everyone appropriates other cultures. It's been going on since humans had cultures to appropriate. I think as long as you aren't mocking it there's no harm.
Really want a mask with this now.
