Yeah ... the expansion draft means you lose an asset. Lose it and move on.
Don't get cute and give up other assets to help them take another.
If they take Kylington, good drafting allowed them to have a 2nd rounder turn into an asset. Move on.
If they take Backlund it's a hole but you have some serious cap space to make adjustments.

Vegas is living on borrowed time of the stupidly overpayments of the expansion draft and they’re about to take a fall.

Being a fan of Vegas must be absolutely exhilarating They're literally in on every big name that becomes available and seem to operate under the theory of grab who you can and figure out everything else later.
They certainly have a boldness that other franchises seemed to have forgotten or just don't care to have. I think a lot of teams could take a lesson from them, in that most GMs are far too timid and think actually doing their job is too difficult.
But I also think Vegas has gone too far in the other direction, and don't really have much of a plan other than "hey, let's get this guy who's available because he's really good!"
Their prospect pool is poor, especially depth-wise, not only because they're a recent team, but because they trade picks willingly. I mean, pretty much everyone knew giving what they did for Tatar was bad Then they turn Tatar into Pacioretty, but have to give up another really good prospect to do so.
I mean, you can't really argue with putting in Brannstrom to get Stone, or Suzuki to get Pacioretty, or that Pietrangelo is probably better than Stastny and Schmidt in a vaccuum, but there almost seems to be a bit of "drunken spending spree with them."
Exciting if you follow the team, but the hangover might be deadly.

Seems to stem from their owner, Bill Folley. Pretty sure he said something along the lines of they were going to win the cup in their first five years. The way they’ve gone about their business certainly speaks to that.

I have heard that they pipe something into the air in Vegas.
I always assumed this was slightly humorous hyperbole.

Vegas had the capital to be very good for a long long time. They spent a lot of that trying to still be very good right now.
Other than being able to sign guys like Petriangelo I think they’re going to be in a nose dive soon. Give it two to three years

By my count off CapFriendly, Vegas took in 17 picks before they played a game, and of those 17, 3 were firsts and 6 were seconds. That's an astonishing amount when you think about it. In the same time frame, they only spent 5, one of which was a first, and one a second.
Since then, they've taken in 13 more picks, although there were no firsts, and only three of those were seconds.
On the flip side, they've shipped out 17, including a first and 6 seconds. They've acquired three prospects in Nic Roy, Dylan Sikura, and Carl Dahlstrom - none of them elite prospects.
They shipped out a mediocre prospect in Demin, and two very good ones in Suzuki and Brannstrom.
And while they add Pietrangelo, it cost them Schmidt and Stastny and could still cost more. IIRC, cap-necessary trades also cost them Eakin, Haula, and Miller - none of them world-beaters, but losses that hammer at your depth.

This x100. Last time, pretty sure this is how the dialogue went for a few teams:
GM: "We might lose a good asset to Vegas!"
AGM: "Oh no! How will we keep that good asset!"
deliberative pause
GM: "I know! Let's give them two good assets instead!"

Yet many expects thought they had played that game very poorly in that they could have drafted even better players instead of getting so many draft picks.
Even posters on this board thought they could have done a better job.
I agree, lose a player and move on. If you gave decent players you can’t protect them all. And if you move a draft pick to protect a player, you can assume that Seattle believes that’s a better deal than picking that player.

That said if I could trade Bennett to Carolina for Bean I would do that.
Protect Backlund. Unprotect Giordano. Protect Bean.
Better use of assets.
If they take the 47 year old Giordano or Kylington than so be it.

Gotta expose Backlund and hope he is taken, I don't think he brings $16million in value over the final three years of his contract at ages 32- 34. I mean obviously you hope they find a way Lucic waives and is taken but aside from that, well Backlund 2022- 2024 is the next worse contract on the team.

Vegas has made a lot of bad moves lately, it looks like they will end up dumping Pacioretty as well. Suzuki will end up being a much better player then Patches ever was. You could even say that Tatar by himself outperformed Pacioretty for the most part. They absolutely got fleeced.

There's a lot of assumption in that statement. You are assuming a big drop off in performance. That could happen, as most of these types of deals have risk at the back end.
But right now - he delivers to his contract value.
Lucic will waive, but with 99% confidence I think he doesn't get claimed.

Vegas is also a place where every player wants to play... certainly makes life easier on a GM

I also would expose Backlund as well.
You are the one assuming we get value from him.
He has been here for a very long time and has had zero playoff success. To me that is not delivering on a big money contract.
He is bad on face-offs, rarely blocks shots and I have not witnessed a big check on another player in 10 years.
How do you know if we would miss him at all till he is gone?
With little to no team success during his time here what would it hurt?
Sure would free up some nice Cap space to get an upgrade.

Well the guy will only play for 4 teams so guessing two of them (one he already played for) isn't really going out on a limb
