I agree that the mediocrity and excellence of music is usually in the eye of the beholder. But what if you believe nickelback to be a good band in your opinion this is one time where opinion is void. They are in fact terrible.
What I truly mean is that they are a lamentably boring band my opinion I guess.

Also I don't know who considers themselves the cat's ass. How is that esteemed?

Posting a thread about Nickelback on this forum is kinda like throwing a big rock at a wasp's nest.

I'm squarely in the "Nickelback sucks" camp. I agree - I haven't heard much great new music IMO in a long time, but I'm sure it'll come around eventually. Considering how long we've been waiting, I'm sure it'll be sooner rather than later.

I'm giving that New Pornographers link you posted a shot right now.

The first time I heard it I was like.. WDF is this crap? Then I listened to it a few more times and now it's one of my favourite songs.

Sorry Dan, I appreciate the link but that is pretty much the opposite of what I like.

It's funny how everyone overlooks the fact that these guys are trying to do something good with the level of success they achieved.

We hate them, they suck, die!

If they are donating the money to charity, that makes them even worse.

They're probably just doing that to improve their image, right?

They can give away all their money and it won't make them a better band.

In the spirit of pimping music, check out ladyhawk, a fancy little rock group out of Vancouver. Coming to calgary in april with constantines, another nifty little group out of Toronto.

I didn't say they were a good band, I said they were doing something good for other people. Big difference.

On another note, any of you guys involved in the music scene here in Calgary familiar with The Cryptomaniacs?

It's funny how people have been bitching about these guys being the worst band ever, and how many years have they been around, people have been saying how bad they were since I was in high school. And wow they get bigger every year... they must be doing something right. If you don't like them then say you don't like them don't critize them and pretend you know more about music. Realize you have your taste and also realize that more people like nickleback than favourite band and thats why they get played on the radio.

And for another thing they are using there popularity to do something good, make people think, even if its for only a moment. maybe they are doing it for selfish reason, but they did something decent.

I'd be willing to bet that there are people on these forums (not myself) who know a lot more about music than Nickelback, regardless of the fact that they successfully make pop music. I'm not suggesting that means anything - just saying your comment isn't necessarily true.

Regardless, are you seriously saying that people can't criticize them because they've been financially successful? I don't think you're going to have a lot of luck arguing that angle.

And, Eddie, I'm guessing that being cynical is just more fun.

I'm saying they are successful in the music industry (yes that does mean they are financially successful but thats a bonus for them getting it right). What they did is created a huge fan base, cater to that fan base, and get bigger every year. So they do what they have to do and they do it well. People may think they are bad, but they also know they don't have to serve people who have "taste" in music.

Bark At The Moon - Ozzy
Cowboys From Hell - Pantera
Dare To Be Stupid - Weird Al
Heart Full Of Black - Burning Brides
Dripping Dime Sized Drops - Headstones
One Last Run - Nickelback

With about 20 others splattered across genre's. So what's on your's.

Then let us music snobs wallow in our misery. You get Nickelback on the radio, we get a thread on Calgarypuck to complain in. Everyone's happy.

I'm not really involved in the calgary scene, but I've seen the cryptomaniacs a few times and I personally like their whole surf punk-rockabilly-ish sound. I like them. Last I saw them, I think they opened for th'legendary shack shakers.

I got a variety of music. I only put full albums on though. I also don't really like downloading so...maybe a little pretentious right there...
here's a few groups I enjoy.
Neutral Milk Hotel
Black Mountain
Be Your Own Pet
Thurston Moore
Les Savy Fav
Bonobo
The Kinks
Converge
The Deadly Snakes
Blackalicious

Some reoccuring themes here but I feel it is diverse enough for me.
