Probably Ward’s allowing soccer playing in practice.

Yeah I don't care if Markstrom is worst goalie in the league if we are contending for the Cup

Hart being rated highly I get. His numbers were gaudy. Binnington, I don't. Binnington was terrible for large chunks of last season and the play-offs. Hart I can see keeping his good numbers, Binnington's flash in the pan is likely done.

That was when I stopped reading as well. Not sure who but the most optimistic fans put us in the top half of the league, nevermind cup contenders. Johnny/Monny have to be massive for it to be true.
Here's hoping.

The Flames are in the top half of the league for sure. Cup contenders? That's a different argument.

I think quite a few of us have reservations on that Tanev and Markstrom signings, mostly because of their ages.
Markstrom has a career 91.1% and is on the wrong side of 30. He basically got 36 million dollars for having a 48 game stretch at 91.8%.
When he is 36, will his save percentage be above 91.1? I think that's unlikely (partially because save percentages are getting lower in general these days).
All of the cup winning goalies lately have been young and homegrown. No UFA goalie signing has won a cup in at least 50 years.
I do think Markstrom will be great for the first 2 years of the contract though, and I'm excited to see how he performs.
I think the Tanev signing is worse, because he has already been regressing for a few years. The main problem with him is the lost opportunities. The Flames could have signed Hoffman, Barrie, Hall, Granlund, for pennies on the dollar instead. All with much shorter term.
I like Tanev as a player though, and I think like Markstrom, he'll bring value to the team for 2 years. And it'll be nice to have him in the playoffs.

Optimistic fans put us top half of the league? I think even haters think this team is that good. Top half of the league is simply a playoff team.
Cup contender could be a stretch but the Flames should be able to compete for a division title and I think are very capable of being a top 10 team. They were second overall in 2019 and top 10 after making the coaching change in 2020

I don't know. There were 15 teams below them. And a bunch within a point or two. Definitely a middle third team. They need a lot to go right to be a top third team. Goaltending is a big part of that but the dynamic duo up front have to earn their money consistently and in the playoffs to get the team there.

But so much went wrong for them and they still finished in the top half and that was before they got an elite goalie.
The Flames had the whole coach issue, injuries and massively underperforming stars for most of the season. They were still good enough to make the playoffs.
Adding a top end goalie, strengthening the bottom 6 and a bounce back from their star players and this should be a top team in the league.

So if everything goes right.
And we talking reg season only or playoffs too?
Not even being cheeky, interested to see your take on that.

If everything goes right we win the division.
Playoffs are obviously a different beast for this team and they need to slay that beast but when things go right for this team which we have seen they are an elite team at both ends of the ice and now have a proven top tier goalie

48 game stretch? Markstrom has been the Canucks best player two years in a row. With a goalie the team in front of him has a lot to do with the numbers. He was fourth in Vezina voting ahead of guys who had better numbers because GM's know what's up. Guy absolutely stole game after game. People think Demko is pretty good go check his numbers with the same team in front of him. (not to mention Demko got the weaker teams when both were healthy)
Also, career playoffs 91.9% playing behind that dumpster fire team D
The whole "no UFA goalie has won a cup" thing is also short sighted...it is VERY rare for a team to let a quality goalie walk as a UFA and in this case it is only happening because of an expansion draft. (and poor GMing IMO) Teams normally keep their MVP goalie or if push comes to shove they trade him.

The Flames had everything go right in 2018-19 and finished first.
Pretty much had everything go wrong in 2019-20 and finished in a playoff spot.
A normalized year probably has them top 9-12 in the league in my mind.

We aren't winning a round with Gio as captain. Need a culture change. If we aren't going to dump him we need to take the C away.

Just give me hockey. I don't think I can take reading about Sean Monahan, Left Winger any longer.
The depths of this off season rabbit hole reminds me of Johnny Depp in Pirates of the Caribbean, where he is stuck in Davy Jones' locker. The Pearl is stuck in a desert and he's gone mad.

I don’t buy this argument at all. What, in Gio’s qualities as a player/person do you think instills a need of a “culture change”?
Do you really think that if the “C” was placed on the chest of another player, that this teams culture would suddenly change? Gio would be looked at as a leader of this team regardless of him wearing the “C” or not.
I personally believe that the impact of wearing letters is a bit overblown

In the last two years Mark Giordano has won the Norris Trophy and the Mark Messier.
Your take is hot garbage. It is a lazy train of thought where people want a simple solution to a complex problem - and in this case, I don't even think the problem exists. So many narratives get made up about teams/players when the reality is that it is just difficult to win in the playoffs, and difficult to win the Stanley Cup.

Look at the track record. How many playoff series has he won and how has he played? Even Wideman and Russell ramped it up one year for us to beat the Canucks.
Why does our entire team gear down in the post season? Does he not bear any responsibility? or is it all on the coaches?
He an awesome human being and is great for the community but how many passes does he get for his pitiful post season performances?
