Default Alabama Says: Guns are Ok, but Sex Toys are illegal

Quote:
According to the statute, it is 'unlawful for any person to knowingly distribute any obscene material or any device designed or marketed as useful primarily for the stimulation of human genital organs.'

Link is ok, but link(s) after that might be NSFW.

Could governments please just stay out of the bedroom?

I don't want to de-rail your thread before it starts, but this kind of thinking drives me nuts! The conservatives (with a small c) want the government out of everything, except places they shouldn't be in the first place.

So brothers and sisters can't be in the same room anymore in Alabama?

I guess people will just have to do the next logical thing.

Guns as sex toys.

Governments?

Surely you mean governmenT. As in the U.S.

Many goverments all over the world already do.

Course they have strange terrible laws against guns too...

Do you want your bang in the bedroom, or your bang under your bed to defend against all sorts of unidentified troublemakers.

Up to you, cause their groups are active here.

That is totally backwards. You can watch an autopsy on CSI but nipple shown during the Superbowl generates tens of thousands of irate letters. Fistfights are the norm in everything from soap operas to cartoons to video games, but just let somebody release a "Hot Coffee" mod that shows graphically rendered sex and there will be Congressional Hearings.

It just seems so backwards to me.

Alabama is attempting to govern decency. They should get the message that the world is not the same place is was in the 50's - this world is beyond morally saving and the only thing to do is save yourself.

Or look at some of the movies coming out, Saw and that kind of stuff. The most terrible violence imaginable is so glorified it's astounding. But that doesn't get a blink.

I don't see how having a sex toy for sale to adults is indecent, or how making them illegal improves the overal decency of the people.

You are right, but you are still counting a phenom that is more U.S. than Cdn. thank god.

And it's these small freedoms and rules and differences tha get some of our (leather or candy?) knickers in a bunch when someone wants to be more like he U.S. or has the gall to say, we don't have a seperate culture.

We do, and it's apparent. Now if you'll excuse me, I have to find a pump for 'Betty'.

Simple question, would you want an "Adult Video Store" within walking distance to where you lived if you had a chance.

Most people would say NO because the products those stores sell is on what most people would call the morale thin edge.

If you have ever been to Alabama or the rest of deep south (Missisipi etc) you would see that going to church (I dont agree with organized religion, I believe it is in direct opposition to the word of the Bible) isnt the punch line that it is up here. That is why they try to outlaw it.

Also, for those comparing this to gun ownership, get over yourself - people like to own guns, they like to hunt, go to shooting ranges etc. What is wrong with a law-abiding citizen in a free country owning a firearm?

Wow just wow!

Humans should not be allowed freedom over their own bodies and consenting bodies, but should be allowed life and death over animals (and yes) humans.

Wow!

You get over yourself sir.

To answer your question I would prefer it over a shooting range, a polical headquarters and a chain coffee shop.

If those movies are made by, and for, consenting individuals; then I don't see what the issue is.

And I can appreciate that. Most of those kinds of stores seem to in areas where there's pawn shops, video stores, and other low density commercial. Not the kind of area I want to live by, more for aesthetic reasons. But this isn't about limiting where some stores can be, it's about limiting the sale of something entirely. Wouldn't they also limit the sale of adult videos and books as well then (to be consistent)?

EDIT: And I have seen sex toy stores in other larger cities that look more like lingere stores or something from the outside, very tasteful and nice looking, rather than the big ADULT VIDEO STORE ugly signage that seem to pervade Calgary. Maybe if these places made their outsides look a little nicer people wouldn't be so against them.

I haven't been, but I do understand how in some of these states' people are trying to (and succeeding) gain power to enforce their views on how things should be. I think it's important for people to see that so we don't repeat that. They're trying to establish a theocracy, which is fine if you are part of the ruling religion.

I wasn't trying to establish a connection between the two or criticize gun ownership, I just agreed with the interesting contrast from the source article.

There's not one but TWO adult video stores within walking distance of my Kensington apartment. It doesn't bother me.

As much as the majority of people on this forum hate Pierre Trudeau, I think there's very few here who disagreed with him when he said, "the state has no place in the bedrooms of the nation".
