Signing Markström addresses a need on top of possibly elevating this team to a higher tier.

Yes, and the same can be said for Tanev - filled a big need

Markstrom is the 9th highest paid goalie next year and finished 4th in Vezina voting. He was a highly touted prospect who many thought would go in the first round d but slipped to the 2nd. He has proven over the last 2-3 years to be living up to his potential while being the Canucks MVP.
I don’t see it as an overpay at all and think that is a good UFA signing. I love the deal and so happy we got the player.

Sure beats continually giving up good assets like a 2nd (‘13) a 2nd (‘16) and a 3rd (‘18) for guys like Ramo, Elliot and Smith.
We needed to stop giving away these picks for short-term solutions.
Markstrom is the most legit goalie we’ve had since Kipper or possibly Hiller in his first season.

Johannes Kinnvall's numbers in the SHL are absolutely insane.
He has the second highest REL Corsi in the league (+14.68) and is BY FAR the best producing D-man in the league at 5v5 (1.65 G/60 + 1.65 A/60 = 3.30 P/60). 2nd place is at 2.40 P/60 and there's only 4 D-men total above 2.00 P/60
A little hyped.

And how about normal stats?
Edit: did they take a break due to COVID? Still 8GP, 11 points.

By my count, he's tied for 3rd in D scoring-but the guys ahead of him have played far more games. Nolan Zajac has 13pts in 14 games, and Eric Gelinas has 12pts in 14 games. Kinnvall has 11pts in just 8 games. Moritz Seider, the highly touted 19yr old Red Wings first-rounder, has 7pts in 8 games-just for comparison.

Kinnvall is now up to 5 goals and 13 points in 10 games played.
Came into today only 3 points behind the point leader on defense despite playing 8 less games. Every other defensemen ranked 1-15 has played a minimum 14 games.
Kinnvall is also HV71's best player by every advanced metric.
Stud.

Wow not gunna lie I'm kinda just shocked at how under the radar this signing was and how we basically just signed a top five prospect in our farm system for free.

I wonder if his recent play would bump him up the CP Rankings?

He's probably our second best defense prospect if you're looking primarily at upside

Doesn't hurt that Kinnvall is from the same hometown as Elias Lindholm. How many Elias Lindholm connections do we have now!

Can he play center? Apparently Monahan scores too many goals to be a center. Goals are a bad thing now I guess.

I feel like we have an abundance of riches in young NHL caliber dmen (or trending towards becoming):
Andersson
Hanifin
Valimaki
Kylington
Mackey
Yelesin
Kinnvall
Plus we have Gio, Tanev and Nesterov.
Good times!
