The Flames are basically going to have three retro jerseys next season. Two from when they were a cup winning team, and one from when they had Todd Simpson and Steve Smith as captain...

They still wore it as an alternate in 2003-04 and 2005-06.

Yeah I don’t associate Blasty with the young guns, that’s the Pedestal jersey for me.
Blasty aligns to Iginla’s breakout and what should have been his MVP season to me.
And this.

To me, the Iginla era was represented by the black C on the red jersey with blasty on the shoulders. The black jersey with blasty as the main crest is definitely young guns era in my mind. It was part of that trend of black jerseys in the 90s. The same time when Philly, Florida, Buffalo, Washington etc. all got black alternates. It was a sad attempt at refreshing the brand when the team was awful. It will forever be associated with this:

Not for me, when you had these two absolute slugs, the epitome of that era, do a series of teaser ads in the days before the reveal of Blasty in June 1998.
Edit:
And yes, the 4 guys in the front page of the Herald as part of the reveal, again line up nicely with the wasteland that the Flames fans had to endure for another 5+ years before making the playoffs.

There is no question that Julianna wore the original Blasty jersey best, but I think you guys are underrating Todd Simpson. He was a good hockey player. Not a great hockey player, but a solid 4-5 D who was frankly one of the best the Blasty era Flames had. Definitely deserved the captain's "C".
Cale Hulse though... the Chris Dingman of Flames not already named Chris Dingman...

Also, how the hell did Rocky Thomson manage to weasel his way into that picture?

Those clippings capture the era of those jerseys so well. Late nineties, the Flames seeing all their stars leave, pre-cap era fears about the financial viability of Canadian teams and relocation, the team trying so desperately to sell a product that just wasn't competitive, questions as to whether or not the team ever could be competitive given the dollar value and not having enough cash for salaries, seeing guys like Niewendyke win the cup elsewhere while the Flames carried former Oilers in the twilight of their careers, and the standard of success being so low that just barely squeaking into the playoffs would have been a huge achievement.
I cheered for the Flames throughout that era, and that was probably when I really became a Flames fan, but those were dark days. Blasty was like a symbol of a desperate organization flailing to ride a league trend in black jerseys and revamped logos in clinging to attention while the excitement in the hockey world was all moving down south. To me, blasty has persisted as an emblem of the most thirsty, desperate, pitiful era in Flames history. That era only really ended with Sutter, Kipper, the black C jerseys and the run to the finals in '04.
But, I guess it's cool they plan to reclaim those dark days. Hopefully it looks good and the current team associates it with winning.

I've never been one to attach jerseys to an era in terms of results, that seems silly. It's all about aesthetics, who cares what happened in them previously?
I mean if the Flames had sucked in the original jerseys in the 80's and early 90's and then became a contender and Cup winner with the Pedastals and Blasty, I'd still be pining for the original retros to come back.

For some of us younger fans Blasty is associated with winning. I associate Blasty with the rise of Jarome Iginla, the first real superstar to play for the Flames in my life. I associate Blasty with the 2004 team, the first and only time I’ve ever seen them in the finals. I associate Blasty with the 2006 team, the first and only team to win a division title (when I wasn’t a baby) in my lifetime until 2019.
I understand why older fans might not be fans but lots of us have good memories of the jersey.
