Amazing news. Is this a one time shot or does it need booster shots?

He couldn’t take credit for it as it had NOTHING to do with operation warp speed but he would have done so for sure. And yes I believe it was on purpose as they immediately corrected the administration when they did try to take credit for it! They were very ready with their response to say this achievement had nothing to do with the US government.

Keep in mind this is still the early Phase 3 data so it is still some time from being available and things can still go wrong and halt it. But certainly promising.

Seems like the timeline is the following:

-they hope to have finished the data analysis end of the month
-expect to get emergency use application so it can be available in certain cases end of December
-widespread availability by Q3 2021...yes Q3.

That is widespread availability though? What about availability to those more at risk?

That’s what the emergency use will be. They are looking at 50 million doses in 2020 and 1.3 billion 2021 worldwide. No idea what gets allocated where or a ramp schedule. Though they did remark they are trying to think outside the box to increase capacity faster. If I had to guess they will try to partner with other companies to have them drop their vaccine programs and use the reserved production capacity for those programs.

It’s a 2 dose schedule and I’m not sure when they say 2 dose schedule and 50 mil doses if that means 25 million people can be inoculated or if they are using “dose” in two different ways.

Doesn't timeline also assume that Pfizer is the only one that has created an effective vaccine? If more companies have success, I would imagine shouldering the load would speed things up.

These things take some time to ramp up, but I expect we would gradually see it becoming available and there will have to be some hard decisions made about which segments of the population have access to the vaccine first.

Which of course means professional athletes will get to skip to the front of the line! We need to get our pro sports back on track here, people!

Yep. If this one works, there isn't a lot of reason to think that the Moderna one (a very similar mRNA vaccine ) wouldn't work. And really, the same goes for the other ones that produced antibodies in phase 1/2 trials. They're all targeting the same spike protein, so chances are they're all going to work to some degree, with some differences in overall efficacy across different age groups, level of side effects, and possible duration of immunity.

Third quarter of 2021?

Sorry I don't throw the term "Q3" around with my buddies a lot.

Isn't the 50% effectiveness rate for flu vaccines largely skewed by the hit and miss aspect of being able to predict ahead of time what strains need to be vaccinated for, and not really about the quality of the vaccine itself?

On a different note, 90% is a pretty good rate for a vaccine in general. Many of the mandatory vaccines we get are in that 85-95% range, so this would be right in there. And those vaccines have had several years of development, so being able to develop a Corona Virus vaccine that quickly with that rate of effectiveness is a huge accomplishment. Hopefully it doesn't become as variable as the flu from year-to-year and that 90% number holds.

I was reading that researchers set the bar at 50% for a Corona Virus vaccine. Anything less than that, and the risks will start to outweigh the benefits.
