I don't think this is a partisan issue but a Canadian issue and I am glad it is being seen as such with every party agreeing. Poppies is not a political statement, it's about remembering why we have the liberty and right to argue against each other even if we don't agree.

I don't agree with the poppy ban, but I can understand it, especially if the decision was from the US head office.

I think it's because if they allow one form of expression, then it opens the floodgates for all of them. which would include many of the political variety.

easier to ban everything instead of opening a can of worms.

If it's a privately owned business they should do what they want, and then we can choose not to shop there if we disagree.

Banning poppies is such a weird, pointless hill to die on for an employer. I think this probably boiled down to total corporate cluelessness more than ideology, but it's still stupid either way.

An employee of the Whole Foods in Ottawa says she was told by a supervisor that wearing the poppy would be seen as "supporting a cause."

"I was basically told … if they allowed this one particular cause, then it would open up the door so that they would have to allow or consider allowing other causes," said the employee.

"Supporting a cause"... that's one hell of a reason.

I guess I understand the initial reasoning of it, next thing you know people are showing up with Trump badges or Biden bages, or I grok spock badges or whatever.



Or a person claiming their rights to declare with whatever badges are out there.


But the Poppy is not a cause or political statement as much as a symbol, so I think they didn't understand the difference and went for the blanket, nertz to everything.


What's awesome was how fast other chains like the Coop and Safeway etc posted pictures of their employees wearing the poppy.

The poppy is the Legion's copyrighted symbol of Remembrance and, in my opinion, has become increasingly more a symbol of the Legion and not remembering the fallen. While the poppy is still portrayed as a symbol of Remembrance, the Legion is quick to ensure any funds raised with the use of the poppy goes to them (see Wounded Warriors). Because of this, and a host of other issues, you would be hard-pressed to find any currently serving military personnel who view the Legion in a positive light. However, the same military personnel are quick to get the torches and pitchforks out and lose their minds over Whole Foods.

Many people have their own views of Remembrance. Many (like me) like to keep those views personal. Some may wish not to wear a poppy. If you wear a poppy, great. If you don't, that's fine, too. I wear the poppy on my uniform because I have to, but I usually don't wear it with civ clothing. Why? Well, that's personal and I'm really not interested in getting in some internet argument over it.

Somewhat related but poppies have become the American flag pin of Canadian politics.

All public figures wear one and it only matters if you don’t. And if you don’t, you’re a monster in the eyes of the public.
