Love to have him on the Flames. One of the only decent Red Wings that I can think of. Good signing.

I think this will be a value contract as soon as next season.

So this contract goes through what would have been 3 UFA seasons. Takes him to the age of 30.
Pretty good value for a player who was almost a point per game.

That's a good contract for the Wings.

Not too long that you're paying him into his 30s, and the AAV is a really good number too.

Yzerman is such a great GM.

If the wings can become a contender within 4 seasons I will be loudly saying that Yzerman is a generational level GM. Tampa, in spite of some minor cap difficulties, is built like a juggernaut thanks to him.

And those cap difficulties are the good kind to have.

They are cap difficulties from having too many good players, but really I'm not sure they have any "bad" contracts.

Tyler Johnson is the closest and if not for flat cap/COVID I'm sure they would have easily been able to get rid of that deal.

TB's cap issues are largely caused by having too many great players due to great drafting.

if you don't have cap issues, you likely haven't tasted much success.

Surprised to see he was nearly ppg last season. This should be good value for the Wings.

I just finished reading Ken Dryden's book about Scotty Bowman, and I get the impression that Yzerman learned a lot more about building a team from Bowman than from Ken Holland.

Always wondered if the Flames had their eyes on him when he went number 20 to Detroit in 2013 and we picked Poirier at 22.

Pretty good 20th overall pick. Imagine if Poirier or Klimchuk had developed into this type of player. The course of history would be different.

I am still upset with Poirier not making it. It really is too bad that he went through what he did, and I really hope that for him, he is past it.

That was a fantastic pick by the Flames I thought, and his AHL rookie season was really, really good. I thought he was on the cusp of making the NHL, and I really couldn't figure out how high his ceiling was, but his floor was absurdly high I thought. I had him pegged at worst as a 3rd line winger chipping in offensively, physically, and being a PK phenom. Very versatile, and would add to the overall speed of the team. He scored some crazy highlight goals in Junior, but he was also a really solid defensive player. Halfway through his rookie season, I thought the Flames had something really solid to count on.

Good on Feaster for trying to move up in the draft and grab MacKinnon, but I've always wondered what it would take to move from 6th pick to the 2nd overall pick. I wonder if Florida would have bit on 6+22+28, or some combination. However, I don't think there is anything to complain about with Monahan. I am just curious as to what Florida possibly would have done there.

By the way, that's a good contract for the Red Wings. I wonder how quickly Yzerman rebuilds that team, and if he does AS good of a job as he did in Tampa. I always wonder how much of a difference a GM makes in the drafting and development of a team - or at least, how quickly he is to make an impact. Maybe Yzerman inherited some really good scouts in Tampa? Maybe he gives them direction? Maybe he is quick to identify poor scouts and replace them early? Will be interesting to see what he does there over the years.

.
I don’t think they take that offer either. That draft was 4 players then a tier then Lindholm/Monahan and then another drop off.

To tie this back to the Wings I still can’t believe Yzerman drafted Drouin over Jones who many thought would challenge MacKinnon for 1st overall

Sergachev is enough of a problem. Jones and Hedman would be unfair.

Atlantic division has to breath a sigh of relief between that and the Bruins 2015 draft blunder.

Drouin had pretty dazzling offensive numbers, and he had Hedman in hand as a top RD. He was also looking at the back end of MSL's career, and needed a winger with offensive dazzle to replace him. IMO drouin was the natural selection in that spot. Stamkos, Hedman, then a winger to support stammer. 2/3 is a good success rate on those picks though, lol. And they did turn Drouin into Sergachev.

Yeah, I think people forget that Jonathan Drouin had 105 points in only 49 games during his draft year. That's 2.14 points per game (MacKinnon was 1.70 on the same team). Alexis Lafreniere had 2.15 in his draft year.

There was no way Drouin was falling.

Just a thought, but CP continues to look at guys like this a call it a value contract, but our own player the same age, drafted the same year who has more goals than Mantha has points in his career is on the quick track out of town according to everyone. Appreciate Monahan while he is still here.
