Not necessarily. Per Capfriendly, if an RFA doesn't receive a qualifying offer they become a UFA.

A non-qualified RFA who became UFA who is signed as a free agent, will once again become an RFA if they haven't met the UFA requirements which are 27 years of age or 7 accrued seasons.

^ Flames signed Dominik Simon as a UFA this fall but he will be an RFA at the conclusion of this coming season

Same with Kahun in Edmonton.

So he goes on to score 0 goals and get blamed by Nicholson for them missing the playoffs. Than he signs with the Flames next season.

I don't think the slotting next to Mcdavid plan would work out too well for the Oilers. We'll see, I guess.

Oilers fans are salivating over their top 6 that includes Kahun, Yamamoto, and Kassian. I see them posting lineups on HF and they think they have a deep forward crop. Hilarious

I don't doubt they will be scoring goals at a rapid pace next year, but playing on the other side of the puck is going to be a big problem next year. That is scary because have been a terrible defensive team for years now, and they managed to get worse over the summer. Most of these forwards are completely one-dimensional players (Neal, Turris, McDavid, Drai, Kahun, Kassian, Pulju)

The guys is a smurf who plays the same kind of physical game as Gaudreau.

At least he puts up points. Only room for one or two of these kind of guys on any team.

It’s funny because as fans we look at our own team and our rivals through different lenses.

I see Oiler fans describe the Flames as a Minnesota Wild clone. We do not have top talent and should be rebuilding. The Flames are one season removed from having 5 players with at least 74pts. The way I see it the Flames have proven to be at worst a bubble team with very average goaltending and an elite team when all cylinders are firing. They now have elite goaltending so if our top players are able to bounce back then this should be a top team in the league.

Oiler fans see a team with 2 superstar forwards and a mix of depth and after last years stronger season they think their team is about to take off again. I see a team that was able to ride unsustainable special teams to a bubble finish and when the return to play began they were exposed to be a bottom 10 team again. Adding Turris, Barrie, Kahun, Puljujarvi is not going to make up for their thin lineup and brutal goaltending. Considering they lost their top Dman they are poised for a step back.

That's what fans do... The Flames signed Leivo who a solid number of Flames fans have as a solid top 6 guy on the Flames the minute one of the current top-6 gets dinged. At the very least he would have been an adequate replacement for Tkachuk in the playoffs.

I had the majority suggesting he push Lucic from the third line to the fourth.

So what's a solid number of fans? 4? 5?

And suggesting Leivo would have been a better injury replacement to Tkachuk than Tobias Rieder is hardly reaching.

My suggestion is that had the Flames signed Kahun instead of Leivo there would be pretty universal approval of him being a Flame (other than myself).

I think their top 6 is pretty solid.

It is their bottom 6, their defense, and their goaltending that are not so solid.

If Koskinen has a good year, they should make the playoffs. If he is his normal self, or if they have any kind of injury trouble whatsoever, they will be swimming upstream bigtime.

The reason I think they make the playoffs isn't because of their sudden awesomeness, it is because the Pacific is a dumpster fire. My rankings:

VGS - changes were probably a wash, but still the team to beat
CGY - improved goaltending, and lots of depth, most improved team in the division
EDM - weak goaltending is a year older, Klefbom is probably out for the season
VAN - weaker than last year, and relying on a goalie that couldn't handle the workload last year
SJS - didn't improve, but better than their disastrous last season
ARI - falling apart
ANA - bad
LAK - badder

I think the Oilers make the playoffs, simply because VAN and ARI are both poised to take a step backwards.

Nobody is saying Leivo is a top 6 guy get that crap out of here.

There is rarely universal approval for anything on this site.
If this is about you seeking validation as some sort of "lone voice of reason" I can mail you out a trophy and we can be done with it. Should the engraving read "Ricardodw: Knows more than us"?

If you're suggesting that people would have been pleased signing Kahun, sure.

If you're suggesting that, given the choice, Flames fans would have chosen Kahun over Leivo, you're out to lunch. Leivo is the better player.

Adding a league minimum depth option is always a good move, as you can stick them in the AHL if they don't work out (make team).

So I liked all the Flames depth signings and I would have liked Kohun as well.

But I certainly didn't see a majority pencilling any of these depth adds into the first line or top six as you suggested.
