Oh yeah, Wide Receivers are starting to use low numbers lately; lots of 10's 12's etc. It's a trend with players.

It’s like the Masters - you win once, you’re in for life.

And I did have an issue with Mangiapane’s 88. It’s not a number you give to a 6th round pick.

Nobody wants to see a guy with 15 points in 70 games cruising around in an 85.
 |
so, as a rookie, they have to take #26, but once they score 30 goals, they can get #85?

That is one hot take.

This is more silly than Burke’s no numbers over 30 rule.
Number gate keeping on non-retired numbers... bizarre.

I think numbers should be tied to head length.

Literally any opinion on jersey numbers outside of retirement numbers (because that means something) is a silly opinion to have. Certain numbers for certain positions? Silly. For time in the league? Silly. For quality of player? Silly. Avoiding numbers held by other players in the league? Silly.

There are none. Zero. Zilcho opinions on jersey numbers for current players that aren't silly, so when one has an opinion on jersey numbers, they should be self-aware, and embrace silliness full-throttle.

Which is why I support jersey numbers tied to head length. This is a worthwhile silly opinion.

If they gave numbers by neck length, Pettersson and Myers would have to fight over who would wear #99 for the Canucks.

My original standard was “star player”. You’re either a star player or you’re not, and it either makes sense for you to have a showy number or it doesn’t.

85 is maybe the worst number in hockey. It’s been worn by a bunch of nobodies and Petr Klima, who, near as I can tell, is the only person to ever kiss the Stanley Cup whilst wearing it.

Full list of 85s:

Vitaly Abramov
Morgan Ellis
Petr Klima
Martin Marincin
Rostislav Olesz
Matthieu Perrault
Liam Reddox

Three of seven 85s wore it for the Oilers, if you needed more proof that number is the hockey equivalent of pancreatic cancer. Apologies to anyone with pancreatic cancer - at least you didn’t have to play an NHL game wearing a shirt with a ####ing 85 on your back.

Well after this debate, I'm definitely buying a Dominik Simon #81 jersey.

K, but then what, since it's already kinda the opposite? Do prospect/ptos then wear the usually hard earned low numbers, or go to triple digits?
