I'd imagine they will go after rural users first. There are a few million potentials there.
Most people in Canada would be located in the private beta zone. As they keep sending up more satellites, the optimal coverage zone will increase.
Too bad we can't invest in SpaceX, or Starlink. This is going to be massive.

I hope that this is the case, right now Xplornet satellite internet is my only option, and it is very expensive, and very slow. Not to mention it crashes quite often. I will ditch Xplornet for a cheaper often as soon as I can, because I have a hard time believing anything could be worse.

Xplornet will be one of the first victims of a successful Starlink.
Unfortunate, because it will affect Canadian jobs.

Looks like we are starting to see some speed test results from the early testing.
All these are done in California, and the coverage there isn't as good yet.
This one is done in Seattle, Washington, and the coverage there is a lot better.
21ms ping is amazing.
If they offer that kind of latency & speeds, there will be a lot of internet providers going bankrupt in a few years.

This makes me happy to hear. I just hope that they can be competitively priced against Xplornet's $129 a month for 3 mbs download speed. /s

I think they will be. I presume companies like that will have a real worry on their hands. Perhaps there is some sort of partnership they could get into with Starlink. Otherwise I wouldn't be surprised to see them going to the government crying foul.
I do not, however, believe anyone but the rural ISP's have anything to worry about for a long time.

Yeah, I also don't think Starlink is going to be competing against urban internet services anytime soon.
Not with gigabit speeds becoming the norm.
But the rural market is massive.
There are 60 million people in rural America, plus another 5-6 million in Canada.
At $80 a month (or whatever it'll be), that is a staggering amount of potential revenue. JUST in North America. Now start going after the rest of the world.
This is going to be massive.

My decade+ long string of choosing VRBO/AirBnB rentals that have unusable satellite Internet despite claiming otherwise might finally be at an end.

SpaceX has confirmed that its Starlink internet service beta tests have shown download speeds over 100Mbps. TechCrunch reports that SpaceX engineer Kate Tice confirmed details about the beta tests during an online webcast. Tice stated that the speeds are fast enough to allow users to stream several HD video streams at the same time while still having bandwidth to spare. She also said that the beta tests have shown latency low enough to play fast multiplayer online games. These two details are quite promising for people in rural areas since these parameters exceed what is currently available.

SpaceX has begun sending email invitations to Starlink's public beta and will charge beta users $99 per month plus a one-time fee of $499 for the user terminal, mounting tripod, and router.

There won't be any invitations in Canada just yet, as SpaceX still needs spectrum approval I believe.
The price point is pretty good though, no?
Xplornet is going to get killed with those speeds. Too bad they aren't public, because I would short the hell out of them.

That's seems like a pretty attractive price (assuming it's without caps) for rural users. It doesn't really come close to competitive for anyone in urban/suburban areas in the US. Verizon's standard non-contract price for FIOS is $40/$60/$80 for symmetric 200/400/1000 Mbps.

I don't see that.
Where did you find that?
I can't see how Canadians would get invites if Starlink hasn't gotten full approval yet.

One other thing I was thinking, a lot of people in rural areas depend on cell providers and internet sticks, and the plans for those are generally pretty expensive.
With Starlink adding some competition I'd think that the pricing structure of the cell provider plans will probably get a bit better.
Generally the speeds are okay if you're within distance of a tower, but the best plan I can get is 10GB per month for $85. 50GB of data is $150 per month.
My guess is those plans will start to get better in a hurry if Starlink is approved in Canada.

Leaked email from someone who got a reply from Musk in regards to Industry Canada approval for Starlink.

Elon said he wasn’t “sure when we get final approval,” but “probably in two or three weeks.
