Shrug. Better to (responsibly, and gradually) transition away from something that is actively causing the existential threat of climate change. I'd prefer to have a liveable planet for my descendants.

Yes. As he should. It's the only practical way forward. Anyone who thinks otherwise is living in a different era.

I, for one, was extremely thankful that he said that and didn't bull#### people anymore. It's time to stop placating people and give them the honest truth. Phasing out is necessary to limit climate change, and it's also the only way possible because we spent the last 20-30 years dicking around debating climate change instead of making the shift in our energy production. Now we are reliant on fossil fuels because we are behind in the technology and infrastructure necessary to make the shift.

Americans need a wake up call, and they need a leader who doesn't deal in malarkey. Go get 'em Joe.

Should've left the oil part alone. That would happen long after the next presidential term. Potential trigger for less informed voters out there that might be buying into every word.

Otherwise a good job by him.

Trump did terribly throughout.

Biden said that he would begin phasing out of oil in 2035, with a general target of 2050 for a change to clean energy. This doesn't mean that the oil industry will be completely wiped out, but it does mean that there is a strong likelihood that demand for traditional oil products will decrease substantially by that time, and a replacement industry should already be producing an alternative.

Biden isn't going to kill oil demand himself, but acknowledges that demand is going to drop. Why prop up a declining industry, when it should be controlled by market and demand?

This is the same argument Alberta should be having. Alberta needs to transition as well. Of course, between now and 2050, the oil industry should be milked for every last drop of profit available. That is the support that Canada should be giving Alberta and NFLD. In the States, Texas and the Gulf are absolutely going to get support for oil product, as long as it's viable.

Biden believes that oil will be a declining asset in 2050, with no path to regaining it's former prominence as a source of energy. It's kind of hard to argue against that.

I'm really disappointed that Trump did so well. He was waaaaay less unhinged than he often is. Lots of people in this thread seem to think Biden dominated. He met my expectations for this whereas Trump exceeded expectations. Trump's demeanor and tone will draw back some people he was shedding. His words and plans were either hollow or lies, but the only people that care about that were never going to vote for him anyway.

Biden won on content. Trump is the net winner, though.

Fata.

Anyone who believes what you just wrote is ignorant about energy, it’s use, and it’s demand.

Literally not debatable.

Who gives a crap if Biden made one misstep, Trump made like 200.

Why are we still doing this? Trump crashes and burns in what would be a historical failure for any other candidate in any other debate in the history of debates.

His opponent makes one tiny mistake and it’s “oooh now they’re even again” wtf?

I agree that it's not debatable, but not in the way that I think you're trying to say.

How anyone comes to that conclusion is beyond me. Joe basically just had to shut down the crazy, and he continually did.

Trump did Trump. No better, no worse.

Biden will be the next President.

You’re high. Anyone who isn’t an insane GOP supporter drinking the Trump koolaid saw trump get demolished and embarrass himself.

But who cares what the idiot Trump voters think? They’re idiots.

It's the low bar Trump has set for himself. Compare him to a normal human, and he did bad. Compare him to past renditions of himself, and he might not look as bad as usual, despite still being a completely ridiculous human being.

But he needed a homerun. He certainly didn't get that.

Biden does come off as a canned politician a lot of the time though. He is way better when he is off the cuff and in the moment, and not going off of memorized pitches. He's a battle rapper after all, not a recording artist.
