I would imagine it is because Treliving and Gaudreau continue to talk about his future on a regular basis.

Hard to say really. It's so far out there is really no point but maybe you are right. A lot is riding on the success of next season and JG's personal performance. I dont know why they'd be talking potential contract a year before they can actually make things official given the state of the team in general and how much things would change on a 60 point season vs a 100 point season or anything else in between.

I read that statement from Burke completely different. He cheers for people he drafted/traded for (Gaudreau being an exception but he was there for his development). The “there” he is speaking about is the NHL, not Calgary.
Especially as the question was if he cheered for anyone and not any team.

Only if he comes really cheap and also if the Flames are trading Hanifin.

This will likely be Chara's last year in the league. He'll want a good shot at the cup. He likely stays in Boston or signs with a perceived favorite. He isn't spending his last season in Calgary.

Jagr played here, I could see Chara too given the right circumstances (ie lack of interest league wide)

I don't think it is at all hard to say. I am not suggesting both sides are having early contract discussions, but I have no doubt whatsoever that Treliving is regularly monitoring the long-term plans of all of his players. I think it is fairly obvious that Treliving would know better than anyone outside of Gaudreau's family and his agent about what Gaudreau wants to do in free agency, and about how he feels long-term about the Flames.
Does anyone actually doubt any of this?

I don’t doubt Treliving has a better handle than most. Though I don’t know that those GM-player conversations can be counted on for truthfulness either. BUT I think the Treliving-Burke communication isn’t what it once was.

Of course not, but I also think a smart GM will also have the ability to sift through the noise and retrieve relevant information that helps him to make a well-informed decision ahead of time.

I’d love Chara for a year. It would be an immediate jersey buy for me, similar to Jagr. No more than $1M though.

If there is temporary realignment this year with mini tournaments etc and less travel that could extend the careers of guys like Chara.

Chara + Perry to add some cup wisdom and veteran presence would be great to see. I’d love to see Ryan moved out too he was far too passive in the playoffs and you can’t have that in the bottom 6 group.

Just some thoughts on the potential repercussions of such a division...

I think covid and the political situation in the US will definitely impact some players desire to play in certain cities.
They are human and it would be hard for anyone not to think about these things.
Having said that, comes down to the player and how much they care about those things vs a competitive team, money, weather, parties, taxes, being well known in public or hiding under the radar, media pressure etc.
I imagine there's a pros and cons list each player mentally makes when they have the ability to decide where they're going.
Probably impacts the guys with families differently than the single guys too.

I can't imagine Chara playing anywhere but Boston at this point in his career. He doesn't need to chase a championship, and even if he did, Boston is still one of the best teams in the league so why not just stay where you are? I feel like it'll either be re-sign in Boston or retire.

Chara =/= Jagr. Jagr spent the last 10 years of his career doing the hockey version of “Have Gun Will Travel”. So coming to the Flames was just another stop.
Chara has spent 15 years or so in one spot. I’m guessing he’ll do what Thornton did in SJ for a year.

Here’s the thing about bringing in guys like Chara and Perry.
Now that we have an elite goaltender, those type of acquisitions might actually result in the team accomplishing something.
