I think it's a good move for the Leafs.

Even if he can't score much, he still brings leadership for a team desperate for it and also some toughness which they are also desperate for.

With him, Spezza and Simmonds around, the young core has some good support.

Exactly, their biggest needs were leadership and toughness. Simmonds and Thornton are good cheap additions that addressed their needs

Imagine telling a leaf fan a decade ago that their bottom 6 centres would be Thornton and Spezza lol. This is a wet dream for them.

Is there some new rule that Thorton and Marleau can't be on the same side of the continent?

If Lou Lamoriello was still the Leafs GM, that beard would be a problem...

Joe might become the first Toronto Maple Leaf to ever wear #97. He'd definitely be the best one in the league.

Toronto wants to fight Edmonton for having the most first overall picks on the roster

Pretty good move for the Leafs. If he isn't working out they can just tell him to head home instead of reporting to the AHL and he doesn't cost them any cap. If he does work out it's an absolute bargain. Even old man Thornton can be effective in a reduced role.

Makes sense for Joe. Easy access to the cottage when the Leafs lose in 6 games in the first round to....let’s say Montreal...this year. No potential pesky border issues between Joe and his boat when the year is over.

He’s playing right now so that should help.

Yeah, but he should be able to stay in pretty good shape playing with Davos until the NHL starts up. Of course, then there'll likely be concern for him wearing out over the course of the NHL season.

I don't think he'll move the needle much, but it's pretty much no risk at that price.

Also, lol:

Aren't the role and type of player practically redundant between Thornton and spezza??? Bottom line C who aren't actually physical or fast enough to play a 3/4 line type role?

The Leaf could run 4 centers, all former 1st over all picks. I doubt that has ever happened.

Spezza has been playing more of a wing lately.

Also adding Thornton on your second Powerplay is fantastic even just for that reason alone.
