Hartley was the last coach that set up a system that played to Johnny's strengths. He allowed Hudler or Brodie to carry the puck in on the right side.
Since GG, dump and chase has become a part of the repertoire, and even last year the entire offensive zone plan was for Johnny to carry the puck in, and if he lost it then they were to grind in the corners. That is recipe for failure.
I wonder what Monahan carrying the puck even looks like?

While I see how Perry might be beneficial to the Flames, I think the price wouldn't be worth it. Perry is a 30pt player at this point, and his intangibles are not worth the kind of money he will be asking for.
I'd be worried about another Lucic situation, pay for a couple big playoff games and watch him coast around all regular season.
I doubt Perry would get much more than a million on a 1-year contract. Might have to settle for near league minimum in today's market.
Don't like him, but am intrigued by having Dube - Bennett - Perry as an option if Lucic has an off-night.

If the Flames are looking to add a vet I'd be far more interested in Carl Soderberg than Corey Perry at this point.
Soderberg still has a lot of game left in him. Can play centre or wing. Huge guy, too.
Interesting, I haven't even seen Soderberg's name come up really at all. Though at the numbers we would want to pay him he may be tempted to return to sweden.
That said, if he's willing to sign for 1 million he would be a phenomenal addition to the bottom 6.
I am going from the dark recesses of my memory, but I thought him signing the year early while brought him closer to free agency by burning a year, also kept him RFA a year longer.
I.e. By burning the year, he stayed RFA, but by not burning it, he would have been UFA a year sooner.
Edit: My memory was close. It kept him away from being eligible for Arbitration and/or an offer sheet, so might have saved the Flames money...?
So, by burning the year off his ELC didn't give him arbitration or offer sheet rights any faster, but did allow his ELC to end and brought him one year closer to UFA. Since he signed a contract worth $.675M, he got that in his third year instead of his ELC amount.
By signing the contract when he did, he got arbitration rights and offer sheet rights in three years, the same as if he had waited and became a UFA. So, nothing really got delayed.
Josh Leivo for under a mil would be great for this team. He would help fill out the bottom six taking some pressure off the rookies ( that we hope will crack the roster). The fact that he plays with pace and is a right shot is a bonus.

Seems to produce decently in an always limited role, but then why do teams keep moving on from him? Not like he was taking up a roster spot from someone in Vancouver for example. Seems like something is off there.
Huge long shot but I would love the Flames to land Granlund. I think he's the perfect fit for this team and can play on any of the top three lines. Responsible player who has shown great offence in the past and I think still has that ability.
So many possibilities for lineups with him including one that has been particularly intriguing for me in moving Tkachuck to the right side of the top line. As defensively responsible as Lindholm but brings more edge and is more of a playmaker which I think would help the line continue to produce when Johnny is struggling.
Would need to ship out Ryan and get Granlund and or Mangiapane on discount short term deals but I think he could be the exact low risk signing that could actually have a huge impact on this team.

He fractured his kneecap last December.
He was moved in 2018 by Toronto, who at the time had forward depth up the wazoo.
no saying that Vancouver is not trying to widdle him down to a team friendly deal as we speak. He is almost certainly look for term or a contract above the league minimum.
Mangiapane at 2x2.75 and Kylington at 1x850k puts us 10k under the cap filling everything else out at league minimum:

I won't be at all surprised if this how we start the year. I'm not convinced we can move Ryan easily enough to replace him with a similarly good 10th forward and also improve the other depth players...hands seem otherwise tied (except for bigger moves)
