Great article in the Athletic about the Canucks losing out on OEL, Markstrom and Tanev, and then eventually getting Schmidt to fall into their laps (while losing Stetcher and eventually Toffoli along the way): https://theathletic.com/2138908/2020...at-comes-next/

Basically, with Pietrangelo pending to Vegas, Schmidt wasn't shopped around the league but instead was offered to the Canucks for a mid-round pick if they were able to take his entire contract. Benning agreed but had to sit tight until the Pietrangelo deal was official; he reportedly asked Stetcher to wait for them (as he needed to keep cap space open for Schmidt) but Stetcher ended up signing with Detroit instead (it was reported that Tanev and Stetcher felt "spurned" by the lack of communication from the Canucks).

I also read about at theory (elsewhere) that Schmidt agreed not to have a full NTC on the understanding that Vegas wouldn't trade him, so that might explain why Vegas didn't shop him and instead approached Vancouver specifically (i.e. assuming that is where Schmidt was willing to go).

Schmidt is better overall than Tanev maybe. But doesn't this really simply boil down to how badly do you need a RD? Burke said Vegas stumbled because they had to play Schmidt on the right side and flubbed with lots of turnovers. If you have your right side sorted out, then you want Schmidt. If you are in need of the hard to find righty....Tanev is who you turn to.

This is exactly it. As a "we're sorry" type thing, the Knights wanted to put him in a place that would be both comfortable for him and not feeding him to the lions so to speak while also being able to absorb his entire contract. Vancouver being on the upswing, having Beagle and Schmidt's best friend, Holtby and could also absorb the entire contract ticked all the boxes. So McCrimmon reached out to Benning and suggested the mid-round pick as the return.

McCrimmon likely saved Benning's job.

Perhaps it is possible for something good to come from signing Beagle.

Lord knows Beagle sucks, so why not try to lure some friends that might actually be good at hockey.
