Let's also remember that even if he does re-sign there is a possibility that the contract would not be a good one for the team? How much do you pay a player like Johnny who has some serious limitations to his game and hasn't produced in the post-season?
That's not a guy I want to overpay.
I don't want him to walk
I don't want to overpay him
So.....you are left with one option that seems the best. Just a matter of when.

They could at least make it more interesting. Make it a rap battle or something, or something else I would truly love to hate watching.

They have to recreate a BlackPink video shot for shot. Whoever executes it better will determine whether or not Gaudreau is staying in Calgary.

If he continues to play to recent trend in the playoffs, it totally is.

Depends highly on one's confidence that he would do this.
My confidence is low.

That is certainly the question.
Teams that lock down guys they see as getting better kill it in the future.
Teams that lock down guys based on something they never become put themselves in trouble.
Mangiapane has very good numbers through a season and a half. He seems to make those around him better when it comes to driving a line. His five on five production at 1.94/60 is 97th league wide in the last two seasons, suggesting he's an elite second liner.
Is he though?
Sample size is the sticking point for sure.
But the team had better make sure anyone trading for Mangiapane sees him as that elite 2nd liner and pays accordingly, or don't move him.

Fair enough and as I have said before I don't think Gaudreau fits well with Ward as a coach. I would like to see him return a guy who can be more of a puck retriever, good forchecker with a nose for the net. If you don't believe the value is there that is a sound reason for wanting to move on. I am all for a Gaudreau trade if it improves the team. I disagree with the people saying you have to trade Gaudreau for the main reason that he wants to play in Philly or out East like that is a fact. Arguments can be made about that both ways. My feeling is he would be open to re-signing here and he was being genuine about what he said at year's end. I am not sure why anyone gets upset about my thinking that.

I read posters mentioning trading Ryan.
Is he even tradeable at this point? I know he brings value to Calgary, but I can't imagine anyone trading for his cap-hit given the current market of free agency and salary cap. I think he would clear waivers at this point.

I'm coming around to the idea of running with this top 6 one more time. If Dube and Mangiapane progress as many of us certainly hope then we don't need to look elsewhere for a boost in scoring. I also believe that we enhanced our D core by swapping in Tanev. Obviously Markstrom will lead to more consistent goaltending and likely stronger play in front of him.
This is assuming all of Hanifin-Gaudreau-Mangiapane aren't displeased/ looking for a way out due to bad contract negotiations/ seemingly often being rumored in trades by pundits.

Do we get to choose which video or do we both have to reshoot the same one?

Was gonna say previously: Johnny’s ask is going to be Panarin’s pay. 7 figures.
Hall got $8M for one year in a flat cap COVID year, from a budget team.

Are there even teams interested in trading much for him? He scored 17 goals last season which is notable but he's a small unheralded player that's probably not on the radar of many teams that probably have similar prospects on their own teams. I feel most teams would be much more interested in Dube.

Thing is it's going to be 7 years and $9M and he's going to be 29 when that contract starts. So tough to predict that he's going to be scoring 85+ points a year for the life of that contract, maybe even the first three years of that contract.
And I worry about how he ages. He's not a fitness freak like St.Louis or Briere were that aged well as smaller players(and even Briere was pretty much done at 33). He already looked like he lost a step in his skating last year at times and without that explosiveness he was way less effective.
I'd want no part of a $9M contract for Gaudreau that takes him to 35+.

I don't even know why you're spending so much time arguing about a guy who's been a Philadelphia Flyer for the last six years.
|
Remember, by signing with Calgary, he ate into one year of his ELC contract already, which brought him one year closer to his second contract. If he took the UFA route out of college, his ELC would have been 3 years. It arguably made him an extra $5M or so. It's what a number of US college players do.
UFA for college players gives the player the right to choose their destination, but it doesn't mean more money. Signing with the team that drafted you early does bring more money.

The teams that employ advanced stats people will be interested. Their fans might get angry depending on the return.

Good question.
I do think that there are teams that scout other teams RFAs based on analytics. If this is the case how could they not be aware of him given all the upward arrows his analytics numbers show.
Other fan bases probably only remember him for his last name if at all.

take contracts out of equation and that he is an easterner, so that has to be appealing, biggest issue with Gaudreau is he has not evolved his game, totally predictable, doesnt have much of a shot, 5 hole is getting old on break aways, skating has not improved. only thing i have seen is Ward got him to back check. give away machine but he does handle the puck more then anyone. I just dont see him investing enough in his craft to truly be a marque player. he may help get you to the dance but after that everyone in the league knows how to play him. just cant get over not working on getting better and evolving ones game, for that reason alone we should maximize our return if we can now, not next year when it gets tougher to move due to contract conditions
