The issue with Brodie is I am sure that Brodie did not want to end up with Seattle and Calgary could not protect him. I am sure he wanted the NMC and got that with Toronto.

I find that hard to believe. If we lost Brodie because we plan to protect 1 year of 39 YO Giordano........ Bengals.

IMO Brodie was lost because he wanted to go to Toronto. Full stop.
ETA: His Toronto contract doesn't prevent him from being unprotected. Though given their personnel it's a pretty good bet he will be.

Brodie got a full NMC from Toronto - so he will have to be protected in the draft. I think the Flames were right to not want to give him the NMC and it had nothing to do with Gio.
Andersson and Hanifin are two guys they want to protect for sure. Rumours have been the Flames are looking at potentially another trade...
For example if the Flames were to trade Gaudreau to Philly for a package that included Sanheim then having Brodie on a NMC would really limit them.
They would want to protect Sanheim, Andersson, and Hanifin, but having Brodie with NMC would limit them from doing so.
I think the Flames just didn't want to hand out a NMC since it would limit a lot of flexibility in trades between now and the expansion draft.

Brodie's NMC is only for this season. He only has an NTC next season so he can be exposed. Capfriendly lists him as available.

I think the Flames are done with defencemen, if anything they look at adding to the top 6.

I don’t follow football(if that’s what it is) but in EPL terms the Flames are kind of like Everton, a mid table team that sometimes punches above their weight. They will never be like Liverpool or Manchester United.

Hmm I'd have to wait on NHL clarification for that.
Last time the expansion draft was held before July 1st and any UFAs were still technically property of their team, meaning the contract was still the season prior contract and not the season after contract.
Capfriendly might have checked but prior to July 1st that means Brodie would still have his NMC since the contract won't turn over until after July 1.
Edit: Looks like this was clarified for Vegas and Brodie will not have to be protected. Honestly though will be interesting to see if there is any grey area here.

Why would any NMC not be “currently effective and continuing”?
Players and their respective teams have the flexibility to apply NMC or NTC protection to any year of the player’s contract, with one exception: A player is not eligible for a NMC or NTC in their contract until they are eligible for Group 3 Unrestricted Free Agency (7 accrued seasons or 27 years of age). That means a player can sign a contract that has a NMC or NTC take effect partway through the contract for the season that they would have otherwise become eligible for Group 3 Unrestricted Free Agency.
Examples: Cam Talbot has a NMC in 2016-17 and 2017-18, and a Modified NTC in 2018-19. He would need to be protected by the Edmonton Oilers because he has a NMC that is “currently effective and continuing at the time of the Expansion Draft”.
Tuukka Rask has a NMC through 2016-17, and a Modified NTC in 2017-18 and beyond. He would not have to be protected by the Boston Bruins.

That doesn't make sense. If he has a NMC for the 2020/21 season, it should protect him until after the expansion draft takes place unless he agrees to waive it no?

Yeah ok, but Tanev has never been a big hitter.
Tanev has thrown 201 total hits over the course of his 10-year career.
Milan Lucic threw 198 hits... last season.

It was reported at the time of the trade that the NMC didn't cover the expansion draft. I'll try and find it.

Tanev isn't going to defend by hitting guys. He'll take the body when he has too, and he'll battle in front, but he'll defend via positioning and stick work.

Didn't you see Louis Domingue's tweet? He's pretty sure Tanev had more saves than him last season.
I love that you guys are going to fall in love with two Canucks fan favourites and be confused by Canucks fans cheering on the Flames. It brings warmth to my heart.

Tanev doesn't do this - he tends to get there first, and get the puck to safety, but often has to take a hit. Makes for better defense and possession - but you're right, he has been injured from playing that way.

Sounds like a real leader who doesn't take the easy way out. I'm not sure he can change his ways at this point, but I hope he can find a way to take less hits with the Flames to increase his odds of staying healthy. Giving him more offensive zone starts or something of that sorts I'd be ok with.

He has a modified NTC, so he does not have to be protected.

Thank god. When/how do we find out if Lucic agrees to renegotiate his NMC so we can hopefully not protect him. It would be such a jerk move for him not to and cost us one of his young teammates. He knows he isn't going to Seattle anyway.

Yeah hard to hate many Vancouver players right now either. It's a far cry from the Kesler/Burrows days that's for sure. Nolthing would make me happier than Ferland playing the whole season
