CBC isn't in the habit of airing hit pieces. Are they more left leaning than centrist? Probably. But Canada is generally more left leaning than centrist anyways.
I, for one, am very proud of the fact that, internationally, CBC is well known for honest, genuine and factual reporting.

Was just going to say this. Canadians don't realize how good they have it for media. The CRTC does a phenomenal job in covering news. CBC is well respected around the globe and in media circles. Canadians should be proud of CBC and the media landscape in Canada. Don't allow lunacy like Fox to leak in, and kill the licenses of anyone who starts politicizing the news like they do down here. Canada still requires the mass media to tell the truth, which is not a legal requirement in the United States.

Had an idea!

As long as a 'journalist' is accountable to his editors and big money, be that public or otherwise, he won't truly be able to objectively cover the news.
There is a reason we are seeing great journalists move more towards and independent way of covering the topics they seem as important.
Everyday in the world there are massive new stories with big implications for everyone. Most stuff gets ignored because it won't drive views. Investigative journalism is all but dead.
How much coverage is everyone getting about the Assange trial right now? Certainly none from the US media, and even less from Canadian media outlets. Do we not agree that Wikileaks is one of the most relevant new stories of the last decade? Why isn't it getting more coverage?
Sad part is nobody gives a damn. News has turned into my side versus them, and there is hardly any more objectivity left.
That being said, with the rise of Substack and similar platforms, we will start move towards a more personal level of journalism, which is long overdue. Hopefully it gives great journalists the ability to share what they feel is important, and not just something that drives clickbait.

Wolf came across as a complete jackass in that interview. Nancy did well. If anything, I trust her more after that.

What? CBC, CTV, and Global have all covered the Assange trial.
https://www.cbc.ca/news/world/britai...ling-1.5746263
https://www.ctvnews.ca/mobile/world/...-bid-1.5095014
https://globalnews.ca/news/7319992/w...t-extradition/
If you're asking why there isn't more coverage right now, it's because the hearing is over and the judge said she will deliver her verdict in January. What more coverage do you want between now and then?

I don't think the move to independence in journalism is resulting in the changes you expect. The reason big media platforms pick a side and double down is because that's what sells. In an attention economy, everyone wants an audience that trusts them enough to follow them, and the best way to have people trust you is to tell them what they already believe. In a more segmented market full of independent journalists where every niche audience gets news tailored to their worldview we will see even more division. While an independent journalist may not be beholden to a news org for salary, that journalist becomes beholden to their audience for their income, creating the same financial incentive to give the audience what they want to hear in a market competing for their attention.
What we need is increased discourse across group lines, and that is a hard thing to foster with how tech has shaped the landscape of the attention economy.

The problem there is journalists would then be on their own to validate their research and then be prepared for legal challenges that would silence them. It has to be acknowledged that reporters gain a great deal of shield from the organization they report for. Without that large body with the cadre of lawyers to protect them, they can be quickly and easily silenced by someone with deep pockets and good attorneys.

Maybe. I have a lot of faith in Roberts keeping them from legislating from the bench, ignoring precedents, and preserving the sanctity of the Supreme Court.

Yeah, that was dumb but then Pelosi's response was even worse, asking if Blitzer was personally feeding homeless people. For one of the most powerful politicians in America, who herself is worth like $80 million, to respond that way is ridiculous. Wolf Blitzer isn't the Speaker of the House; you are.

ACA might be done but the others are going to be tough to repeal. Kavanaugh was expected to vote 100% in line with Trump's agenda but he's been reasonable in my opinion.
It sucks that Barrett will be confirmed but I still have hope that she won't be as bad as some fear.

I didn't hear her say that in the clip above.
She is absolutely right that they shouldn't sacrifice the EIC and child tax credits to send out another round of $1200 checks so that they got something done. That would be an absolute disaster to the working poor and lower middle class. I don't imagine her demeanor won over many people, and I don't always like her, but the message in that clip is bang on for people are familiar with the programs she referenced.

Great post. I never realised how good the media landscape was in Canada until I moved to Australia.
Canadian style truth in reporting laws are desperately required here to stop the constant misinformation from a 70% Murdoch owned media monopoly.

Please people, maintain some decorum about the woman who dismissed a wrongful dismissal lawsuit for a black man who was called "n-word" in the workplace by his boss.

You are getting tricked again. The law is more complicated than that. And it was a unanimous 3-0 decision.
