I find it funny that he thinks that Pietrangelo and Lehner will only get better after 30 but Markstrom and Tanev will fall off a cliff since they're past 30. Unbiased reporting at it's best right there.

And Lehner is currently having shoulder surgery. Rumor was the Oilers offered Markstrom $5.5milx7. imagine the praises Staples would be singing if they landed him. "Solidified our starting position for 7 years with the best goalie to ever hit the UFA market. Updated parade route out later today".

Tyler Ennis, who has averaged 1.85 pts per 60 at even strength the past two years (a better number than either Toffoli or Athanasiou, not to mention Josh Anderson)
I hate the points per 60 reference, without referring to actual time on ice.
Absurd example:
Boston Bruins pts/60:
Brendan Gaunce: 6.48
Pastrnak: 4.397
Marchand: 4.027
Zach Senyshyn: 3.6
Bergeron: 2.974
I guess Gaunce is better than all by that measure? Of course not, as he only averaged 9:10 per game.
Also, this season Toffoli had 2.11 p/60 with the Kings and 3.24 with the Canucks, both times averaging 16:35 and 18:11 TOI per game respectively, while Ennis had 1.76 with the Oilers and 2.142 with the Sens averaging 14:43 and 14:42 TOI, so it looks like he had to add another year with the prior team to fit his narrative in any event.

Thanks for the breakdown, I was thinking this when reading Staples stupidity. If Ennis was that good in terms of production, then they should be playing him with top line minutes, because clearly he's a 100 point player production wise. But he's not.
Staples reason for living is to exaggerate every signing, throw up videos of every prospect and then bark that they are all sure fire NHL'ers. I mean he was positively Poolparty's publicist, but if you watch the video's of that league, it was no contact, huge seams because of big ice, the goaltending was far from NHL standard. I'd look awesome in selected picks of my beer league games, when I was motivated to play. But there's no way I'm an NHL'er.
I expect that unless something radical has changed with Poolparty, he's going to be plagued by the same issues that effected him last time. He doesn't see the ice well, he can't make quick decisions, and while his physical toolbox is very good, his mental toolbox is poor.
As much as Staples crows about the Oilers winning. Frankly
Ennis, Smith, Turris, Barrie and Poolparty are cast off signings that other teams looked at and went nah. Turris has been bad for a while, Barrie is the wrong defenseman for that team, Ennis who cares, and Poolpary is reclamation.
Frankly Calgary, Vegas and Vancouver have all improved, Edmonton has probably dropped.

Oilers add two outcasts that their teams let walk (one that was willing to stomach paying the guy for 8 YEARS to see him gone), a project that didn't want to play for them but reluctantly signed likely for a pay day, and a 38 year old goalie no one was calling up and gave him 2MM and an NTC because... reasons.
Flames signed a top 5 starter that carried his team through the regular season and two rounds deep cause his team couldn't keep him, and a top 4 defenseman that can defend.
Sounds like one grabbed as much stuff from the yard sale as they could and looked at their pile of junk and because it was bigger they claimed it a win, while the other quietly improved the most important position on their team for a while and didn't feel the need to make a big deal about it on their fanboy hockey blogs.
So desperate for validation that you can't help but make fun of these dopes.

That Staples article is hilarious. I would say goalies typically do not establish themselves until they are 27-28 and their prime is typically 30-35 and so many starters in the league fall into that 30+ age range.
Just a huge win for the Flames and even sweeter we beat the Oilers out for his services.

This was like the garage sale episode of The Office
Calgary went home with the Telescope
And Edmonton is Dwight after getting the magic beans that he gave up the Telescope to get, before realizing that they were just a sham.

Yup, I lived there from 2005-13. It totally feels like Calgary, right down to Edmontonians hating on both for being "snobby". I used to call it Practice Calgary.

Staples delivers as usual. Is this guy something or is he something?
Quote:
Loser: Calgary Flames
How can they have lost? They brought in a No. 1 goalie in Jacob Markstrom and a solid d-man in Chris Tanev. ... <meaningless crap>...
P.S. I’ll note that the Associate Press had the opposite take on Markstrom in calling the Flames a winner in this market: “The Calgary Flames improved their chances of advancing in the playoffs for the first time since 2004 by adding perhaps the best goaltender on the market...

Quote:
Winner: Edmonton Oilers
Hey, I’m an Oilers fan. What did you expect me to say? ...<meaningless crap.>...
For the opposite point of view, Ken Campbell of the Hockey News had the Oilers as UFA season loser for failing to bring in Markstrom...

If I had to guess his editor made him put those notes in there to try and make it seem like the paper has journalistic integrity. AKA: only this homer thinks this.

It makes a person wonder what level of pathetic failure the Oilers would have to fall to in order for him to have an assemblage of reality in his writing.
The Oilers give up 4 first round picks for an unmatched restricted free agent only to become a lottery team each year & have the picks land in the top 5?
I doubt even that would do it.
When you have no integrity you have no shame.

It's not just Staples... it's the whole NG media
The offseason Oilers are usually the feel-good, laugh-a-minute comedy hit of the summer, but this year the laughs are held over.
