Baffles me when people want to pencil in Mackey, who has never played a pro game yet, onto the NHL club and consider that a given, rather than a happy outlier.

Agreed. I would even say that, to a lesser extent, about Valimaki. He is coming off a complete lost year due to injury.

-smooth-skating, bland defenseman
-name difficult to spell
-comes to Flames from a former Southeast Division team
I think Hanifin reminds a lot of people of Jay Bouwmeester (and therefore some dismal Flames squads)

Valimaki's a bit different, in that he has elite hockey sense. Might be the smartest defenseman the Flames have had since prime Giordano. Between that, his size, his skating, and his pedigree, it's safe to say Valimaki deserves a chance not only on the roster, but in the top four.
I also feel the same way about Kylington though.
Both players deserve some real opportunity next year, not to be treated with Kid Gloves. Of course they'll have moments with gaffes and moments where they're caught overextending and out of position. But the more icetime you feed them, the more confidence they'll build until they're cruising. The goal should be to maximize both players' confidence by playoff time.
I agree with Mackey though. Let him get used to the pro game. If he excels, elevate him but don't expect him to excel.

This is exactly part of the problem IMO. Salary wise, taking Backlund out of our Top 6 creates a bad salary structure with the Backlund, Ryan, and Lucic contracts in the bottom 6.
Looking at your proposed structure:
Gaudreau-Lindholm-X
Tkachuk-Monahan-X
X-Backlund-X
Lucic-Ryan-X
The x's are: Bennett, Dube, Mangiapane, Rinaldo, Robinson, and maybe Gawdin.
If we sign Mangi and Kylington as expected, it only leaves us < $2Million to upgrade.
So unless one of the x's are being shipped out in a deal no one is going to like, there is no way to upgrade our top 6 with Backlund moving down the lineup as it crushes our salary structure.

The Flames projected lineup
Gaudreau - Monahan - Lindholm
Mangiapane - Backlund - Tkachuk
Lucic - Bennett - Dube
Rinaldo - Ryan - Pelletier
Robinson
Gio - Andersson
Hanifin - Tanev
Valimaki - Yelesin
Kyllinton
Markstrom
Rittich
The obvious holes in the line up is the second line.
The Flames need to add there, so that they can shift talent down the lineup.

Who is projecting Pelletier to be in the lineup? Or even Yelesin for that matter?

Geeze, do I ever disagree. It’s the top line that was outplayed much of last season. The “second” line was often the flames best line.

Me. I think that he has a better shot than Phillips or Gawdin.

Maybe add that
"my projected lineup" or "what I think the lineup will look like"
So nitpickers like me don't ask these follow ups

Flip Mangiapane and Gaudreau - especially for playoffs*.
Mangiapane - Monahan - Lindholm
If Ward is going to insist on a heavy forecheck type of game*, Mangiapane has that dog on a bone quality to him that maybe what Monahan and Lindholm need.
Lindholm seems to be a defensive conscious so it may be rare that he is F1 for the top line. Mangiapane is a get there first type of guy and perhaps that 'jam' is what they need.
Tkachuk - Backlund - Gaudreau
When CGY breaks out it almost always goes up the left side. Gaudreau getting the puck and carrying it in seemed to be targetted by opponents ie they waited for him to get puck in nz then kind of swarmed him. If he had to dump it, the line was not great at retrieval.
Backlund can be the guy to carry the puck - leaving Gaudreau to make his magic on the right side once the puck is in the offensive zone.
If the line is going to play forecheck game Backlund and Tkachuk are great at it.

lol, I just automatically assume when someone posts a line up they pull it out their ass haha. It was more or less a this is what the Flames line up would look like if they don't add a body to their top six.

After the Flames put Mangiapane into their top 6, he finished the season with 17 points (9 goals) in 19 games.

I would give Pelletier all the leash possible. Might be the only genuine way of improving the roster short term without making a potentially devestating move to the roster (or breaking the hearts of too many posters around here.)
Gaudreau-Monahan-Lindholm
Pelletier-Backlund-Tkachuk
Mangiapane-Bennett-Dube
Lucic-Ryan-Gawdin
Rinaldo
Hanifin-Andersson
Valimaki-Tanev
Gio-Kylington
Markstrom
Rittich
I would try it.

A guy who hasn't played a step above junior is on our 2nd line now?

I think that Backlunds best days as a 2nd C are over, and that Mangiapane has yet to prove that he is an everyday top 6 winger in the NHL.
Improving the second lines scoring potential would help the first line find space. As it stands now teams can load up against the top line, knowing that no other line poses a real offensive threat.

Doubt Gallagher signs a long term extension with anyone this year. He will play his year out and hope the market improves.

Gallagher would've easily been the second best forward available if he was UFA.
Teams would be doing whatever they could if all Gallagher wanted on an extension was $5.5M

Tkachuk - Monahan - Mangiapane would be a better first line than the "league figured out" Gaudreau - Monahan - Lindholm. Let Gaudreau learn to adapt to Backlund's North/South game, instead of relying on Monahan's shot. If you don't think that he can do that, and feast on second line matchups, then for the love of Gawdin, just trade Johnny.

If the forward market really has crashed, get in on a value signing with Dadonov! He could be our Radulov! His name ends with a “v” and that’s very vood!
