They also might look at trading Mangiapane, who is probably looking at $3-3.5M. But I don’t think they will actually sign Hoffman.

We simply can't afford Hoffman unless we move Ryan+ somebody realistically. Or Hanifin and replace him for a $1M Dman somehow...
More realistic we add a UFA that's looking for a good opportunity to improve his standing next season. Like Galchenyuk, Wallmark, Grabner, Sheary, Leivo, Athanasiou, or Melker Karlsson for $1M as the available money continues to disappear around the league.

They thing is - are any of those guys an upgrade to Mangiapane or Dube, who they’d be pushing down the roster?

He’s still carrying a 8.25 mill cap hit and though he just had a 3 mill bonus payout I can’t see him being moved until the trade deadline.

I'm not sure they'd be pushing anyone down frankly. Maybe Pushing Lucic down off the 3rd, or to even just play on the 4th. Guess they may not get a great opportunity in that case.
But there's only so much money left to spend around the league, some of the remaining UFAs are going to see the chairs start to disappear as the music stops.

One thing working against the flames when looking for offers on Gaudreau is that every team knows he is pretty soft and wants to play near home. Would we want to trade for a skilled but soft player? Gonna be tough getting a decent return

I thought about that, but the notion was they were trying to boost themselves, and that’s not happening unless they are at least on the third line and also the powerplay. So maybe to push Lucic down, but he plays a pretty good role on that line.

Hoffman’s got all the ingredients to become the next James Neal.
If he’s willing to take a one year deal for cheap, sure. But for what he’s probably expecting to get, do not want.

How so? Hoffman is a much better skater and has a better a shot. I don't see them as comparable at all.

I'd be happy if the Flames quit looking at UFAs handed out a handful of Ptos and then tried to make their larger adjustments via a trade.
Still, I think that the number one pick is off limits. That said, the second or third should be in play.

Does a guy who puts up 36G/70P and still somehow ends up -24 sound like a good person to give a retirement contract to?
This is exactly the kind of player who becomes an albatross once he starts to age out of top 6 production.

I am so ####ing sick of this fear about the next James Neal bull####. You have to be willing to take a risk. The good clubs do their due diligence and minimize the risk hanging out there. The issue is to make sure that you do your research and make sure the guy is the right fit. Nothing in Hoffman's background or performance leads me to believe his game is falling apart. He's coming off ~30 goals and has been consistent in that manner for five seasons. He's not a ######bag like Neal and seems to be a pretty good guy, even after all the bull#### that Karlsson threw at him in Ottawa. He's just been a solid producer at a position we need significant help at.

He did improve to -5 this season. His defense isn't great for sure, but his skating ability and shooting ability will keep producing at top 6 level for a few more years at least.

Jersey will hit the floor very easily by simply filling out their roster.

Can we PTO like half a dozen guys from the UFA list and see who rises to the top?
The one saving grace is that Dube, Mangiapane and Valkmaki are very much in the way up.

James Neal might not have become the guy we know and love if he had signed a one year deal.
