Think it will depend on the return
If it's pure cap then ya, if someone is returning some cap, then probably not

I want them to do this by process of elimination now. Every 20 minutes tell us another team that it isn't.

Traded to Gary Bettman for a 1st
them skating through the expansion draft is brutal...while every rival losses a player

The Flames already have 4 top 4 Dmen plus Valimaki, Kylington, Mackey and Petrovic.
They aren't adding any more top 4 Dmen for that reason alone, never mind the fact that they don't have cap space once they get their RFAs signed and fill out the roster with near league minimum forwards.

Agreed, however I would think they need another #5 or #6 dman
Tanev has had injury issues, Kylington may not be ready, Petrovic is a depth guy
Not quite sure, if Mackey is ready or if requires more AHL time.

Tanev basically played a full season last year (reduced due to covid).

Yeah, Vegas is gonna need to eat some of that cap unless he's going to a cap floor team.

The Flames don’t have the cap to add him, unless the move out equivalent cap.
And their needs lie elsewhere.

Sure, look at the previous seasons. Trend indicates he is likely to miss some time.
64 games - 2013 - 2014
70 games
69 games
53 games
42 games
55 games - 2018 - 2019

Isn't Schmidt considered to be a #2? Although your point still stands...

Think more of a Giordano replacement. 2018-19 Gio has left town.
Schmidt has been at a different level than Brodie for the last 3 years. The fact that Vegas is chasing big game is the only reason that Schmidt would be available.
Makes the Tanev 4.5 x 4 look really bad if someone is getting Schmidt for a prospect and draft picks and cap space.
Vegas has only one R- shooting D-man. Schmidt played mainly RD with McNabb on the left.
What Vegas gets for 5.95 x 5 for Schmidt the Flames would get a lot less for 4.95 x 4 for Hanifin.
