Default Islanders sign Cory Schneider (1 yr, $700k)

Pierre LeBrun @PierreVLeBrun
Hearing that the Islanders are finalizing a deal with UFA netminder Cory Schneider. There's the obvious connection there between Schneider and Isles GM Lou Lamoriello. Happy to see Schneider, 34, get a chance to continue his career. One of the good guys in the game.

Pierre LeBrun @PierreVLeBrun
Once the Isles finalize the contract with Cory Schneider, it will be for one year, $700k

So thats a bit odd isnt it? Sorokin, Varlamov and Schneider?

Unless the plan is to have Sorokin in the A all year.

I think it’s more like the Domingue signing in Calgary. He is just a safety in case a goalie gets hurt. Also perhaps due to the condensed schedule he is there for practice/to sit on the bench in some games.

Having 3 goalies, no matter how condensed the schedule is, is a horrid idea

History suggests you are right, but it seems like teams are preparing to have that option. I also assume that next season will be less safe than the bubble. In our reality it might as well be a backup to one of the goalies getting COVID before a game. I am just not sure what would the rules be about bringing up players from the AHL this year.

I think a lot more teams are going to pick up an extra goalie. It makes sense and isn't horrid at all for this season.

It is horrid in past seasons because goalies become a bit unsure of their future with the squad - these moves aren't going to make that happen.

More difficult in practices, but as long as the two main goalies are getting the bulk of the practices, that's ok. They will need to be rested if the schedule is condensed, and the team may find a situation that they can't recall a goalie due to shutdowns/border closures/etc.

I think Treliving was proactive here. I think all the goalies may find a home this season. I thought Schneider was destined for retirement, but not in this weird season.

Tell that to Colorado, who had to roll with Hutchinson in the playoffs.

Guy was never the same after what allegedly happened to get him traded from Vancouver. He just could not handle stress.

He had 3 excellent seasons in NJ, before he experienced a drop in play.

He will be in the AHL most of the season. Hopefully he is able to get his career together.

Didn't he #### the bed in the play-offs or in any game with pressure on it?

Once you’re down to your third does it really matter if he’s an AHL vet or the zamboni driver?

No actually he didn’t. His only playoffs with NJ were in the 17-18 season. After fighting to get back to form for most of the season he lost the net to Kinkaid, who got lit up. In 4 playoff games he had a .95sv% and 1.78GAA.

Good for him. Glad he saw some success there then. All I ever saw was him playing bad or struggling with pressure.

Rhetorical question. Use your head and figure it out.

Wonder if it's a 2 way/they plan on carrying him with the AHL a bit

I see it a lot like the Flames signing Domingue. Teams are going to want an extra goalie this year to float between the NHL/AHL depending on who has injuries

I don’t know what it is, but Vancouver is such a hard city on goaltenders.

Though this maybe a joke, but just read it is true he did suffer panic attacks while playing.

That is awful. If anyone has seen (let alone experienced) someone come down with a panic attack is an awful thing.

Glad to see he is battling to stay in the league, and hope he sticks around. It is a win for mental health.
