Lucic at least has utility as a bottom 6, Johnson no so much. Nobody is taking either contract without something else going back though.

I had no thought Calgary would, could or should pick him up.
My only point that when a player like Johnson goes unclaimed, it proves cap is tight. And that Lucic would be much harder to move.

IMO, Toffoli would be a great fit on the 3rd line but his ask (5+ with term) is going to be too expensive in that roll.
Dube - Bennet - Toffolli as a third line would look great, at least on paper.

I'd throw an offer sheet his way, but not one large enough for any form of compensation.

Ho-Sang's time with the Isles has reminded me of Aliu's time with Chicago. The only incident with Ho-Sang I've heard since going pro is sleeping in once and then he never received a fair shot after.

LA took Maatta for more money and more term and he's much less impactful than Ryan; also the C market for free agents is barren, Ryan is arguably better than any UFA center.

There is a reason a guy like Rieder or Mangiapane works in Ward’s system, Bennett too when he’s on. They have the will and the wheels to retrieve pucks in a chip and chase style.
We don’t need more skill (well everybody does). We need puck hounds. This team can score of the rush at will but Ward is intent on tic tac toe triangle breakout and low risk plays.
Point is, I think they should try to get more speed on the wings. Best case scenario our three centres are Lindholm, Monahan, Backlund and Ryan. Bennett and Lindholm can double shift on the wings as well. Get speed, lots of it.

Tkachuk Backlund Lindholm
Hall Monahan Mangiapane/Dube
Lucic Bennett Dube/Mangiapane
Is my ideal top 9 with the forwards we currently have plus swapping Gaudreau for Hall (really hope it happens). I think Toffoli is a decent player but would be wasted on the 3rd line. He's a top 6 or bust type of guy and mangiapane should be the guy getting groomed for top 6, as well as Dube. No room for another forward who gets more than 1m, especially if we somehow snag Hall.

It would have to depend on the contract. My guess is he wouldn’t be cheap.

Only if it's 4 or less per. I dont know if Toffoli's camp would go for that number.

I guess some other options to look at would be Hoffman, Dadonov, or maybe even Duclair. All depending on cost. Something tells me Dadonov wouldn't come to Canada, but who knows.

It’s really quiet. If I were to guess, based on who Friedman believed would be in on Hall as of Friday morning, I’d say it’ll be one of the Predators, Canadiens, or Flames - but there has not been any real noise since free agency began, just rumblings that this team or that team is out of the bidding for Hall.
If I’m speculating on this/reading into the silence, I think Calgary is going to get him. If it was Nashville, it would be done by now. They have the cap-space, they have the need. Calgary though? They likely want to pull off a trade and announce the signing in one shot/pretty quick succession to maximize leverage. Hence the silence around the Flames and the teams interested in Hall.
I’m hopeful Calgary pulls this off. It would be huge for us.
|
My gut is telling me that Hall is going to Nashville and we have no hope. Then I read this post and I’m back to believing Flames are getting Hall!!!!! Let’s do it!!!!

It’s sounding more and more like Colorado is out on the Hall sweepstakes and it’s coming down to Boston and Nashville on a shorter contract.

There are plenty of unrestricted free agent forwards parked, waiting for Taylor Hall to make a decision on where he intends to play next season. Hall, the top free agent forward on the market is considering short-term offers with contending teams and is hoping to take that and bet on himself to cash in on a bigger contract after the pandemic settles down.
While many were expecting that the Colorado Avalanche would be high-stakes players in landing Hall, that isn’t expected to happen now, according to Adrian Dater of ColoradoHockeyNow, who writes that with the acquisition of Brandon Saad from Chicago Saturday, it’s extremely unlikely the team will spend even more money on another high-priced forward, even on a short-term deal.
Saad’s acquisition likely fills the team’s need for forwards and it’s likely that if the team does go after another free agent, it’s going to be on defense. The Athletic’s Aaron Portzline also adds that the Columbus Blue Jackets are not likely a candidate to sign Hall despite the available cap room that the team has.
Dater writes that the two leading candidates to sign Hall are the Nashville Predators and the Boston Bruins.

Right?? It seems so foolish to spend a high pick on a player only to bury him. I’ve always wanted to see Ho-Sang given a long look at the NHL to see if he can be an impact player which I think he has the toolbox to become.

Yes, because highly sought after UFAs routinely take a cut in pay. Hall is likely going to cost $7-8M. Toffoli I think will come at the $5-5.5M mark. We can afford Toffoli much easier than Hall. Toffoli is also more durable than Hall. I think they should go sniffing around him and see what they can get done.

Ho-Sang filed for arbitration so he can't be given an offer sheet.

What makes you think it would be NJ over say Philly?
And what do those deals look like? Who from Jersey makes sense coming back, or would it be primarily picks/prospects?

Ho Sang has had character issues all the way back to midget hockey. I doubt the Flames would be interested in him because he has character issues. When asked if there was an I in team, he replied "No. But there is an "m" and an "e" and that spells "ME."
