The argument will be made that Backlund is slightly overpaid, and that is true. On its own, Backlund is slightly overpaid. But in the context of the team, there are too many salaries that add up to being overpaid and for this team to attract the top end talent it needs we need to dump those salaries. Milan Lucic's salary is a massive anchor, dragging this team down when it needs more air to breathe. Unfortunately that contract is immovable. Which means you have to start looking elsewhere. Backlund and Ryan are the next in the crosshairs because they are both overpaid for the roles they are cast into or the value they provide. So they are the ones that have to go. If there was a way to rid ourselves of Lucic, then things would be different and Backlund would be a salary you could live with.
Our center depth is horrid and you want to trade Backlund? Mony can’t drive play , and Bennett is not a sure thing for 3rd line center. He was great in playoffs, but is he going to revert back to regular season Bennett? Yes we should trade Ryan to free up cap space if needed.

Truth is, players like him (e.g. Tyler Johnson) are getting waived and clearing. Is that set in stone for Backlund? no. However, he doesn't have the value some seem to believe on here imo.
Johnson cleared waivers, probably because they all know the bind Tampa is in. Tampa will be forced to buy him out, then some team will get him for a fraction of the cost.

Tampa can’t buy him out this year.

2nd line C's are much more coveted than 2nd line wingers.

He has value, no question about it. It just has to be enough for BT to send him elsewhere and somewhere MB will agree to go to.

Tampa is going to be forced to include a pick or prospect or maybe even additional roster player along with Johnson; some sort of sweetener. Detroit is still my pick for where he ends up.

The Vancouver Canucks remain in the market for a top-four defenceman and are one of the teams that have expressed interest in Travis Hamonic. As they aren't the only team in that mix, they're also exploring multiple options.

Yes they can....just need someone to go to arbitration or take someone to arbitration when the team window to do so opens.

I can't help but wonder if Hamonic opting out of bubble play really affects his value. I mean it looks like we're going to be living with COVID for some time yet.

Agree on Ryan, as Coach Ward has demoted him to the 4th line now. (he was a Peters guy)

Backlund is worth what he is paid and has been a very important mentor for the likes of Sam Bennett (rookie year) Andrew Mangiapane and Matthew Tkachuk.

Sorry but I think you guys are out to lunch on this one... Backlund on his way out, not even worth a 5th, waiver fodder, it is absurd to say the least.

People forget how Backlund was probably our most consistent and reliable forward during the playoffs; the guy bleeds Flames and doesn’t deserve to be this under valued by fans.

I totally get that if such a move were to happen, it would be to shed the salary and in no way a knock against Backlund and what he brings. However, I don't think we have a guy that can effectively take that icetime, so I don't like it.

Start with Ryan to clear cap space, not the 2nd best C on the team

With Backlund’s 200 foot game, there’s a case to be made he’s our best Center. Criminally undervalued for what he brings to the table.

My bad, thought today was the 12th. Yes you are correct they have until 5pm eastern today to have some one apply for salary arbitration. I’m not sure anybody is eligible though?

I wonder if Gustafsson is starting to realize there isn’t really a market for his services at the price he is/was looking for.

I would look at trying to bring in Vatanen before Gus.

Travis Hamonic ≠ top-four defencemen.

I’m hoping flames don’t spend anymore money on D. Flames need to concentrate on forwards.
