Not right now, with Mangiapane's upcoming contract we're almost up against the cap. Tre has to magically get somebody to take some contracts off our hands.

They would have to move Ryan + ... without taking any cap back. Seems very hard in current cap environment.

I can’t believe the obsession with Toffoli all of a sudden. The guy is a grinder with a simple skill set. On a championship team he’d be perfect for the third line and on some teams maybe the second line. To put him up on a first line would be making the same mistake we’ve always made in free agency - paying a guy too much and expecting too much when he doesn’t have the skill set for it. He’s simply not first line material in the modern game and he absolutely should not get the salary that he may be thinking. He doesn’t fit in with what the team needs most right now (high end skill) or the luxury of fitting what his co tract will ultimately be (north of $4.5MM /season for a bottom 9 guy).

If we traded Ryan for a pick, re-signed Mangiapane for $3mill, and filled the rest of the roster (13F, 7D) with league minimum contracts we would still only have about $3mill of cap space.
I’m not sure what impactful forward we could add for that, let alone Hall!?
It’s unfortunate, because I think we need to add another good forward, but we don’t have cap space and there is no one else left to trade without getting worse except Lucic who is not going anywhere.
We might have to trade Ryan just to get us under the cap when it’s all said and done. Mangiapane seems to play hardball in contract negotiations.

Unless the Flames plan on Markstrom pitching 5-6 shutouts each round, this team is still first round fodder with their garbage "top" players.
This core has had ample opportunity to do anything in the playoffs and they fail over and over. Going into a new season without changing them, I have no clue how people expect them to perform differently.
Even better is the Flames get a further disinterested Gaudreau as he counts down the days when he can sign in Philly or anywhere East coast USA. Goaltending did not cost the flames the past two playoff rounds they were in. The flames best players playing scared and getting their heads caved in is what cost them. Keeping those same players and changing the goalie and the #2-3 dman is not going to get you a better result.

Tkachuk-Monahan
I think these two should be tried together, you have a great playmaker in Tkachuk and a good shooter in Monahan. Both guys have decent size and can compliment each other along the boards and in front of the net. On the RW, I'd put Ryan there as he gives these two a bit of speed and quickness and he can also help Monahan on the faceoffs. Sometimes, you can switch Ryan and Dube a bit for a different look.
Gaudreau-Lindholm
I just don't like Monahan and Gaudreau defensively and I think it's time to split them up. Lindholm has chemistry with Johnny and he's one of our best two way forwards. On the RW, can be a mix of Ryan, Dube or even just a bigger body like Robinson or Gawdin. Maybe even Phillips to give Johnny another shooter to pass to. Or it could be a veteran that you can get on the cheap like a $1 million. Guys like Alex Galchenyuk, Ilya Kovalchuk or Corey Perry.
Mangiapane-Backlund
These two have good chemistry and are responsible defensively. Again, you can rotate the RWingers through, but a guy like Gawdin might work here. Again, signing a guy like Perry would be great for this pairing as he brings a lot of what Tkachuk brings. Galchenyuk as a guy with all world skill, but a low GAF meter might also work. Giving him a permanent home with two real hard competitors might be a good match to get this guy going. Or maybe you sign Frolik for a $1 million and give another variation on 3M. Frolik would also help on the PK which the Flames will probably need some help with Jankowski and Reider gone.
Lucic-Bennett
No need to say much about the bash brothers. Dube worked well on the RW here, but if they want to use Dube to support the other lines above, you can always throw Robinson or Rinaldo into the RW to create a real crash line. It'd be a fun line to have for the Battle of Alberta or games against the Ducks or Sharks.
|
Monahan with Tkachuk would be way too slow. Bennett and Lucic worked in the playoffs because of Dube’s speed and creativity. You don’t mess that up

You're absolutely right. I also believe a two year bridge is likely the direction the Flames go. i'll say 2x2.75

I think Mangiapane will get around $3 MM. Another part of me thinks he might actually get traded in the next little while.
Gaudreau + Mangiapane for Konecny + Frost
Backlund for 5th Round Pick
Ryan for 7th Round Pick
Sign Dell, Hall, Namestnikov (cheap), Athanasiou (cheap)
That should be enough of a jolt to the forward group and gets rid of some unnecessary contracts.
Line 1A: Hall-Monahan-Konecny
Line 1B: Tkachuk-Lindholm-Dube
Line 3A: Lucic-Bennett-Namestnikov
Line 3B: Gawdin-Frost-Athanasiou
Robinson
Giordano-Andersson
Hanifin-Tanev
Valimaki-Kylington
Mackey/Yelesin/Petrovic
Markstrom

I just think it's better to have the size and hitting of Lucic, even if he costs the salary cap $750k more per season. Johnson has no value as a bottom 6 IMO, while Lucic does. At this point, I don't think Johnson brings anything more than we already have to the top 6 either.
Plus, Lucic was great in the playoffs.
|
Who was talking about the bottom 6?
Anyone that was going to claim Johnson would play him in the tip 6.
In ant event, Lucic has one of the more immovable contracts in the league.

Calgary, once they fill out their roster, are basically with a full cap.
So, to sign Hall means to send out equivalent cap. Presumably that starts with a Johnny for futures deal. I’m not sure that would even be easy in this cap world.

Backlund for a 5th is lunacy.
Ryan for a 7th is silly.
Gaudreau and Mangiapane for Frost and Konecny is interesting

Backlund is overpaid and getting older. The Flames need to try and get out of thst contract while they can.
Tyler Johnson just went unclaimed.. what makes you think Backlund has much more value? I want to see Lindholm playing center which means Backlund is going to get paid too much money as a third line center.

Don’t disagree with moving Backlund, but I think he has much more value than a 5th.

Fair enough. I would agree to an extent but that Johnson waiver makes me really think what his true value would be. Certainly not going to get a first round pick right now.

People can dispute this but unfortunately it is 100% spot on. The only 2 xfactors are if Markstrom can have a vezina season and carry it into the playoffs and/or if Valimaki finds a Game changing Heiskenan level of play.

I believe both those things are possible. Not sure how likely, but still possible.

So, the top forward players don't show up for 2 straight post seasons and the solution is better goaltending and defense?
That's a pretty dumb management group if that is how they think in my opinion.

Flames management needs to improve the team in any way they can.
On paper they've improved the goaltending by leaps and bounds. Hopefully that translates to real results.
On D, they added a strong modern day defensive defenseman type. It remains to be seen if it is an improvement, but they needed to bring in a top 4 right shot Dman and they did it.
As for the forward core, I believe it needs a shake up too. But I don't want change just for the sake of change. There is still lots of time to get those changes made, but it's hard to criticize when you don't know exactly what is being offered from teams around the league. It's easy for us to sit here and armchair GM like we do and trade Gaudreau & Kylington for Konecny and Frost, but what if in reality that deal just isn't being even remotely considered by the Philly GM. Or what if Hall/Toffolli/whoever has shown no interest in signing with the Flames.
I want change to the forward core, but not if it makes the team worse. If that's the case then Treliving has no choice but to stand pat until something better is being offered.

They need to improve all of F, D and G
Unless I missed where the team said this is the starting lineup for next year, I'm not sure what you're upset about. I personally expect some trades and/or a cheap third liner signing after the big name UFA wingers go
