I wish I knew Talbot personally. For sure Holland called him, and for sure he laughed and hung up the phone (assuming he actually took a call from a 780 area code).
They would have been better off with Dubnyk, but I'm assuming he call screens those numbers as well, and threatened to retire if he ended up there.
Enjoy Mike Smith. I hear he's a good 3rd defenseman when he isn't fishing pucks out of his own net.
I would bet Holland opted to keep his old Detroit number for precisely this reason.

He must be one of the dumbest guys out there covering hockey.
His job depends on Oilers fans not intelligently looking at this roster and throwing in the towel before the season even starts.
This level of commitment and perseverance to this cause is admirable. Reminds me of a guy that predicts that the earth will end today and still has the commitment to wake up every morning and do it again...

That is a very apt comparison for what that clown does.

They're within a half million of the cap and still need to sign Bear. They're looking even worse next year. But fantastic cap management by Holland who looks like he's just as confused and poor at his job as Chia Pet.

I don’t even mind smith. And I said it before they signed him. Koskinen had similar save% and GAA to Markstrom so I’m not super worried. We were sitting above Calgary in the standings before the world went to hell and they were doing good. Holland is still cleaning up the mess from Pistol Pete and I think he’s doing a good job. On the plus side I promise none of his signings today will be a buyout candidate in 3-5 years. He’s biding his time till next year, when some of these contracts are off the books.

It sucks to be in next year country months before the first game is played.

But the contracts that are "off the books" after next season, aren't even that bad (minus Kris Russell and obviously the Pouliot buyout)
Henrik: “It’s ok, I’ll take league minimum. I just want to chase a cup”
Washington: “It’s ok, we got ya bud. Here’s 1.5 million.”
Edmonton: “We know you’ve got no other options so we’ll give you league minimum.”
Smith: “Hell no. I’m not spending another year in Edmonton for less than what Lundqvist is getting!”
Edmonton: “Ok, here’s 2 million.”
Smith: “Uh, that was too easy.”
Edmonton: “We have no other options either.”
