It has been awfully quiet when it comes to the top free agent wingers such as Hall, Toffoli, Hoffman etc.

If they come into camp and win a job, that's one thing. But it's another entirely for that to be pretty much your only option.

Because for the most part these are young adults in their 20s. Making millions and living like rock stars. Do you really want to try that in winnipeg?

With the condensed schedule the Flames aren't likely to trade Rittich, and if they did they certainly wouldn't replace him with Zag.
Markstrom doesn't exactly have a strong record of staying healthy either, and they just committed to him for 6 years. The last thing they're going to want to do is dump 90% of the workload of a condensed schedule on him.

Then the PTO system will do that work for them. Seems to do just fine every year.

Since we're signing Canuck FA's, I wonder if Josh Leivo could be had for a bargain right about now?
Right shot RW, he's a good player but missed some time with injury. 0.53 points per game last season.

His cap hit was $1.5 million last season.

There's so many things for premiere UFAs to consider: Money, lifestyle, term, roster fit, chance to win, management, ownership, coaching staff etc. I often wonder why they would choose some teams over others.
I think of Hall right now. Depending on how he prioritizes the above list, a 31 team league drops to about 5 teams pretty fast. If you want a 7 year deal, how many of the suitors with cap space are in a position to win now? How many of those 7 years will you be wallowing in mediocrity. If I were Hall I would seriously consider the Rangers. If they want him. You get to live in New York, you can light it up with Panarin while the team maneuvers its way into contention. Depending on the Rangers' moves, combined with their cap space, they could have a real chance to take a run at things with Kakko and Lafrenierre on their entry level deals.

Teams like Colorado, Vegas, heck Calgary too are going to have to make tough roster decisions in the next handful of years with some massive contracts coming up. Then those teams window is closed before you've even settled in the city.

COL, CBJ, MTL already have room, mustn't be on the preferred list.

Yes but that probably means that he will tell all clubs on short list to up the ante. I don’t expect him to sign today .

I think that the time of tinkering with the defense core is over. Calgary has 7 NHL defensemen and 2 AHL players knocking on the door, getting big minutes.

Ryan ($3.125) to Ottawa for 4th rounder

Yes, we are overpaying in each deal, but you're going to have to move salary at this point. The goal is to get the pieces that make the team stronger where we are weakest.

 Tkachuk($7.0M)-Monahan($6.375M)-Lindholm($4.85M)
 Mangipane($2.75M)-Frost($864k)-Toffoli($5.0M)
 Dube($779K)-Bennett($2.55M)-Armia($2.6M)
 Lucic($5.25M)-Gawdin($750K)-Robinson($700K)
 Rinaldo($700K)
 ($40.168)

 Giordano($6.75M)-Kylington($750K)
 Hanifin($4.95M)-Andersson($4.55M)
 Gostisbehere($4.5M)-Tanev($4.5M)
 Valimaki($895K)
 ($26.895)

 Markstrom($6.0M)
 Rittich($2.75M)
 ($8.75)

 $75.813M + 2.67M BO = $78.483 ($3.017 cap space less bonuses)

The other alternative is to change the deal with Philadelphia.

 Gaudreau ($6.75M) + 2nd for Sanheim($3.25M) + Frost ($864K) + 1st ($4.174)

That could allow us to take a run at Hall changing the lineup.

 Tkachuk($7.0M)-Monahan($6.375M)-Lindholm($4.85M)
 Hall($8.0M)-Frost($864k)-Mangipane($2.75M)
 Dube($779K)-Bennett($2.55M)-Armia($2.6M)
 Lucic($5.25M)-Gawdin($750K)-Robinson($700K)
 Rinaldo($700K)

 Hanifin($4.95M)-Andersson($4.55M)
 Sanheim($3.25M)-Tanev($4.5M)
 Valimaki($895K)
 ($25.645)

 Markstrom($6.0M)
 Rittich($2.75M)
 ($8.75)

 $75.813M + 2.67M BO = $78.483 ($1.267 cap space less bonuses)

Two ways of changing the dynamics of the lineup.
 |
If Johnny was on the market there'd likely be a lot more smoke. (we shall see)

Backlund would be Captain if not for Gio, the Flames are trying to bring in more leadership (ie: Tanev) not ship it out.

I see you calling others out for suggesting trades with no salary coming back and here you are doing the same with Ryan?

We could perhaps see Välimäki in the top 4 soon but Kylington will probably never be on Calgary's top pair.

Tanev is a top 4 defensemen.
