Flames would need Gio to agree to be exposed. Flames already need to get Lucic to waive his clause. Wouldn't be a good look.
Brodie is a good player, but you don't give out NMCs to anyone short of a superstar. Unless you're the Leafs, that is...

All this could be said about Brodie

We aren’t 1 Tanev away from being cup competitive. There will be a lot of similar D signing cheaper and shorter deals
I would rather have an 80% of Tanev for less money and less term and focus on strengthening other positions as well

Gio does not have a NMC. He can be exposed without giving permission.

I agree there are bargain d-men in UFA right now. But it is looking increasingly likely that Treliving isn't going to be able to shore up other positions through free agency. A Hall contract is going to require them to move a big name and I suspect the returns there aren't good enough to warrant the move. That leaves who? Hoffman?
I'm not a Treliving fan, but I also can't ignore his options. He wasn't going to get Pietrangelo or Krug. Have to assess these moves on what's realistic given his position.

First 2 years of Tanev sound good, then it could get dicey as far as his overall value. Which is why Vancouver offered 2y. But this team will look vastly different in 2 more years of offseasons, as well potentially outside of the unknown with Covid, so not concerned about that.
The Flames aren't getting Pietrangelo, so they need a top 4 defenseman and this is what they've come to and that's fine.
But it sounds as high character, dependable and solid, which is what the Flames need as Gio begins his decline.
It does mean Andersson has to step up as well.
For all of his good things Rasmus brings and does, there were times when he made pretty significant brain farts or flat out lazy plays defensively, so he really has to cut down on those to be a everyday top paring guy.

Nope....term wasnt there.
And are you really saying Tanev doesnt play a hard physical game?
Seriously?
Like....you could not be more incorrect with that "assessment".
Will he regress moving forward? Probably to some degree but he is a guy that brings it every game and will continue to do so until he cant any longer. There is literally nothing to suggest that time is now however.

Fairly safely too. There are more attractive picks from the forwards on the Flames. Even with a Lucic waiver you have to expose either Mangiapane or Dube. In addition you are probably exposing Rittich unless he’s been traded.

The Brouwer/Neal type deals in hindsight have handicapped the team which is why we can't go for the big fish. Adding a big name player now without giving up much would have been huge.
As of right now our top forwards don't have enough jam. Hopefully Tre will be able to address the top 6 before the season starts.

At least the Flames will get cap relief when Tanev does get hurt!
The team also needs a young Tanev-lite RD to step in. Is Yelesin that guy? Boltmann won't be ready for a while, and there're no other right shots on D in the system.
For that matter, are any of the left-shot D in the system who can play the right side ready?
Maybe a Madison Bowey or Ryan Mantha could be signed to a two-way deal and be inserted on the main roster as needed.

Petrovic is RHS, with NHL experience. And Kylington has played on the right. And Yelesin is RHS

Rittich will be a UFA won't he?
7F to protect (as it stands now)
Tkachuk
Monahan
Gaudreau
Lindholm
Mangiapane
Backlund
Dube
So Bennett would be an option for sure, but past that? No one meaningful really.

Definitely some overreactions in here.
Had to replace Brodie. Tanev came in cheaper than Brodie, is roughly the same age, produced the same number of points last year, and is a bit better defensively.
Canuck fans allegedly were sad about him leaving, just as we were with Brodie.
Is it more than hes worth? Maybe by ~1M (top four players tend to go for this range though). Is it too long? Maybe by a year. But those are the concessions you make in free agency. We plugged a hole with a capable player that will probably at the end of the day be an upgrade on the defensive side from Brodie & Hamonic.
Cool your jets. Calm your bits.

Tanev plays gritty and is a warrior but he’s not necessarily the most physical. He doesn’t actually throw a lot of body checks according to his stats. Honestly the only Flames regular dman he’s more physical than was Brodie, he throws fewer hits than Gio.
Not that the stat means anything or is an indication of being a good dman, but if people are looking for a big, mean dman that’s not what you’re getting with Tanev. We’re not getting a Regehr or even Sarich physical type of shutdown dman.
Not sure how he rates on Ricardos GRIT statistic but judging by his reaction not that good.

Rittich will be. But they will have to expose a goalie.
That said, I would be sad to see Gio go if they picked him but it wouldn’t be an irreplaceable loss for the team at that point.

Oh yeah, I forgot about the Petrovic signing.
I know Yelesin is right-handed, but is he ready to step in after just 42 games of NA experience (4 in the NHL)? I have no idea, although I'd guess he's ready for a bit role.
