Okay. Open minded to this.

I like it. I've heard it said Tanev is a great team mate.
Apparently his d partners numbers exploded because of him.

His goalie is here now....he wants to be here ....so perhaps all the God damned gloom and doom is just that as a typical knee jerk pessimistic Cp reaction.

Welcome to the Flames man.

Thought about this last night.

Pretty sure Seattle will be taking Tanev in the Expansion draft.

We could trade Bennett and Mangiapane for McDavid and people would be losing their #### calling for Trelivings head on CP. You gotta learn what posters to ignore

Barrie I can't see on the top pairing with Giordano trying to defend MacKinnon and McDavid - and although I really like Andersson, his footspeed limits him against opposition like that.

Tanev is fine - I think he can become a dependable defensive player capable of moving the puck well enough. Not a TJ Brodie replacement, but I thought Brodie was the 3rd best defencemen (arguably) available - Krug may have been the 2nd best.

I am really trying to figure out how to patch-up that Brodie hole now... this might be a decent fit.
A replacement for Hamonic?

I like it. It's a bit more expensive than I hoped it'd be, but there's a premium on right handed defensemen I guess. As long as he can stay healthy (and let's be optimistic here, he didn't miss any games last season), I think he can be a really nice fit for our blueline. High character, good skater, good defensively ... I'll take it.

I would have liked a year less, but 4.5m is what top four d men make in today's NHL. Tanev is the 4th highest paid D man in the Flames after all.

I am not a fan of signing players over thirty, still the Flames D is very youthful, and atleast 1 rookie is going to be playing a lot of hockey.

Again the four years is what gets me. Still, with and expansion draft, and the brouwer/stone buyouts coming to an end soon, there is a way the Flames can pragmatically cut bait if need be.

I have mixed feelings. You can put me in the wait and see camp. If the Flames find playoff success I will be happy and that's the bottom line.

I think Treliving not only needed to find RD but also to fit into how Ward wants team to play. And this concerns me. I don’t want to see the style of hockey similar to Gulutzan. I get they are trying to take next step but does that mean plodding dump and chase?

Obviously it’s best to see the totality of off season moves and actual games to see how they play.
I think Tanev is a guy you have to watch closely and frequently to appreciate his game (does little things well).

well Tanev got to round two on an overperforming team this year. Nobody actually thinks the Canucks have the horses to pull that off again anytime soon.

I wonder if we'll see some number shuffling this season?

Tanev has worn #8 for most of his NHL career (he wore #18 as a rookie), but he also wore #43 and #12 when he played in the AHL. So, he might not be overly attached to the number -- although he has worn it for a long time now.

Valimaki is currently #8 but he also wore #6 in Junior and when he captained Finland at the WJHC. He is currently wearing #40 in Finland. #6 is currently not in use on the Flames.

There's also the question about Tkachuk and #7. It's his dad's old number and what he wore in junior, but I'd say he has made #19 his own at this point. Also, when he and Brady both make Team USA in the future, they won't have to fight over who gets to wear #7 if he keeps #19.

When the Flames first hired Gulutzan as a coach I looked him up on YouTube. I found a video where he was giving a presentation to other coaches on how he wanted his defensemen to play in his system. At the time he was coaching the Canucks. If I remember correctly, almost all his examples of good positioning and defensive play highlighted Tanev. A lot of the negative involve Edler.

Reaction to this trade shows how difficult it is for fans to assess defensive d-men. Tanev will make it more difficult for other teams to score on the Flames. That’s a good thing.

For all his ability to skate the puck out of the zone, Brodie could be a gong show in his own end when the other team had possession. Also, having a true RHD matters. It’s why RHD get a premium in the trade and UFA markets.

Agreed. Getting a right handed defensive Dman plugs so many holes in Calgary's roster. This is a huge upgrade on Hamonic

Well that scares me. It does seem like Treliving found himself in a corner on this signing.

Toronto hit a home run with the Brodie contract, no doubt. The risk of decline with him is not nearly so significant.

Tanev's contract notwithstanding.

Brodie isnt particularly good at defending, something Toronto really needs. He may not be a good fit on that team.

As a UFA signee Brodie is as likely to be the whipping boy for his gaffes and incredibly soft play.
We had a soft spot for him because he was drafted and developed here, but he won't get that sympathy in toronto.
Wish him well, but fans can be cruel.

We were soft on Brodie? That's news to me.

Other than the Gulutzan years Brodie was consistently an excellent defensive defenseman and his results over the last few years have been significantly better than Tanev's. Obviously I think there were more things at play and Brodie probably wanted to go down east. Tanev will probably be fine for a couple years but it will be incredibly difficult to replace what TJ brought to this team.

we're going to miss their personalities but these terms both guys signed for is a huge no for the Canucks, especially this Tanev deal.
I think you nailed the majority of Canuck fans feelings on the 2 players...

The guy I worry about is Tanev who could become the Flames version of Loui Eriksson especially when you consider a flat cap for maybe the next 2 or 3 years.

Hughes elevated the play of Tanev, not to mention Luke Schenn who was paired with Hughes in his first season...

Actually I'd prefer Schenn over Tanev even before considering the contracts...

Pairing Tanev with a quick puck mover will be key otherwise he eats too many pucks which has led to too many injuries...

That's a bit harsh. There's almost nobody arguing against the Markstrom deal. Personally i don't mind that deal, because you have to do it in my mind, but it is still worrisome. And with our latest history with UFA signings it's fair to not be fond of it. The same was said when Neal and Brouwer signed. ("You're nor real fans"; You're so negative"). And a lot of the critics were right. Let's see how this one is going to play out.
