To be fair all the ex-Oilers worked out pretty well
Vancouver reportedly didn't retain Stetcher because they needed the cap space to try and land OEL, and still keep enough money off the books to sign Pettersen and Hughes next off-season
I think OEL is off the block now so I wouldn't be surprised if Vancouver is in discussions to bring Stetcher back

Oh and pelletier and mangiapane would be swapped lines lol

I don’t think Pelletier is NHL ready yet

I think there are more trades and signings to come...this is nowhere close to the opening night roster IMO

^ Yes, this team is still way too soft. (Hanifin especially)

Yeah, I am uneasily curious about the rest of the off season now.
Flames basically filled two very important holes in the roster on day 1 of free agency, but they are now essentially right at the cap, without a full roster and no changes or upgrades made to the forward core yet.
Gaudreau - Monahan - Lindholm
Tkachuk - Backlund - Mangiapane (3.0)
M. Lucic - S. Bennett - D. Dube
XXXXXX - D. Ryan - XXXXXX
XXXXXX
Giordano - Tanev
Hanifin - Andersson
Valimaki - Petrovic
Kylington (0.8)
Markstrom
Rittich
Leaves only $1.9 million of cap space.
Some major #### is still going to go down IMO.

Maybe, and maybe not. The Flames may just roll with Rinaldo and Gawdwin on the 4th line and try to get Mangiapane on a two year deal with a lower AAV.
I think if Tanev is paired with Gio, then Hanifin-Andersson will become the #1 pairing in the course of the season. And Kylington would be better served developmentally on the 3rd pairing with Valimaki rather than riding the pine; that is Petrovic's job. Young as he is, I think Valimaki already has the tools to compensate for Kylington's defensive liabilities, and the two would be an exciting young pairing with the potential to move up the lineup over the next few seasons. Kylington is already more experienced playing on the right side than the left, and who knows, maybe his upside is eventually becoming a Brodie replacement as a mobile defender who plays on his off side.

Robinson will probably fill the empty 4th line winger slot.
I think Ryan will get traded and Gawdin will fill that spot

Ryan for a 3rd wouldn't be terrible at this point, assuming that Bennett can centre the 3rd line full-time. That would open up the possibility of a Gaudreau trade and Hall signing.

Change is good. We may not like it, but we haven't enjoyed the result either.

You are not getting a 3rd for Ryan with a flat cap. You might need to attach a third to get someone to take him. Regardless he needs to go, we need the cap space.

The gauntlet has been laid down. There are legit spots available for Pelletier, Phillips, or Gawdin to take. It will be interesting to see who comes out and earns it.

If the Stecher signing happens, I predict a bold move we might see is Hanifin being the one moved out for a top 6 forward. Maybe for Palmieri?
Would be risky as the Flames would have to rely on Valimaki and Kylington stepping up next season to fill the hole, but Tanev, Stecher on the right side to support the young d-men might work.

You could replace pelletier with Phillips or any other contract around 1 mil and maintain that roster. Its the d that is suspect. Not necessarily weak but young.

There are a couple of trades happening. If Treliving goes into the season with this mix, this team is going no where. Based on the coach and the style of play, they have to move a couple players. I still think Gaudreau is gone in the near future. I wouldn't be surprised to see Hanifin moved. Ryan and Lucic, should have new addresses, but who is going to take them? Backlund's contract looking bad right now too. I can't help but look at the salary structure of this team and wonder how Treliving is still employed? So many mistakes that are holding the team back. Still a lot of work ahead IMO. It's a hole that Tre is going to have to dig himself out of.

Yeah, very interesting cap situation now.
Flames setting themselves up to have to play real hardball with Mangiapane again

He'll almost-certainly file for arbitration, so that's the worst-possible scenario but it also gives them a deadline to make a deal well before the start of training camp.
