Canuck fans I know love Tanev.
He's not Hamonic. Tanev can actually play defense and skate.

The only way this at all works out is if Tanev let's Gio go nuts on offense while dragging up his numbers.
Even then, Tanev is an incredible bet to miss at least 1/4 of every season so really you might as well prorate his salary to $6M

Personally not a fan of this deal. 2 years too long, though this likely is reflective of the current dman market. By letting Brodie and Hamonic walk, it's understandable how this happened, but I'm not a fan of Tanev overall to be on the first pairing. Blah. How much cap room is available now?

Losing Brodie and gaining Tanev makes us a significantly uglier team as well.

I agree, but at least Hamonic was younger.
Tanev has already been regressing.

Absolutely yes. Far deeper and broader skillset.
Coming from a guy that really, really likes Brodie.

I may be in the minority but I don’t mind this Brodie for Tanev swap.
This is where we need AI to do some CP analysis because I bet over the years the negative Brodie posts far outweighed the positive.

Yeah the more that I think about this the more I strongly dislike this signing. Just terrible stuff. I fear this will even further handcuff the team's cap situation for quite a while.

Tanev is a better defender than Brodie...maybe less potential offence
right handed, same age, little less money
Seems odd to be freaking out over it...especially since Brodie is gone either way

Easily his worst move as Flames GM...and that includes the Brouwer and Neal signing.
To give up that draft capital for that type of player who was a UFA after three seasons was just a ridiculous move.

It's possible. Tanev is more of an old school warrior. Reminds me of Scott Hannah but with better skating.
Brodie is as smooth a skater as you will find. A great guy to boot. But he is soft as butter and very suspect defensively. Good player, but overrated around here.

Paying $15 million to Backlund, Lucic, and Tanev is going to age like milk.

The Flames are basically paying Tanev $4.5M to play 60 games per year, knowing full well he's likely missing the other 20+ games
Phenomenal

I'm the opposite, I'm slowly warming up to it. It's not a steal of a deal but I don't see it as horrible, either. It's just ok.
This team needed another RS on the blueline badly, Pietrangelo wasn't happening, maybe Barrie wasn't either, so the Flames went with the guy that can play great defense which was needed.
Looking forward to seeing how the blueline looks, and there's still plenty of time for other moves to be made.

I think that Tanev is a good player when he is healthy. So, if he stays healthy, this deal shouldn't be bad. Plus, he is pretty much a guarantee to be exposed to Seattle

Hard not to like a player like Tanev but don't expect a full season out of him...
Best chance of keeping him in the lineup seems to be playing him with a puck mover like a Q Hughes...
Overpayment for sure, but like Markstrom it had to be an overpayment on either term or dollars or both to get them because both loved Vancouver...

Any news on an NMC? This is a player if left unprotected I could see Seattle picking up.
