Wow. Player’s decent, this is a significant overpay however. Hopefully I’m wrong.

Tanev is a pretty good dman. Nothing flashy but gets the job done. Brodie is a great skater, bur not very strong on d coverage though. As Warrenen put it once, an unpredictable adventure.
Its not out of question that Tanev helps the Flames more than Brodie.

 His injuries are concerning though.

			Definitely didn't see this coming!
He's not the same player he was a few years ago and he has always had injury issues but you will never find a more calming defensive influence, a more helpful vet for rookies, or a more fearless player despite the injuries.

This one makes me more sad than Markstrom. It's a bit of an overpay, but not that bad.

But watching tanev play, you're never gonna say, hes not giving 1000% percent, guy blocks shots when the team is up by 3 or 4 goals ffs

Also his skills are not ones that will age poorly, hes a good skater but he doesn't rely on speed, hes not offensive but it's not like he doesn't have puck sense, he rarely pinches but when he does it's always a good one

Most importantly his play in his own end is still elite, you basically have the guy who's playing RHD with a minute left when your holding a lead for the next few years and hes very good at it

Thank you.

You’re making me feel better about this at least, but I still have concerns.

Mostly I’m worried about injury prone 31 year that lost a step last year but before that he was an elite defensive dman.

I still wish we just would have tried to offer sheet Cernak for 4 x $4.3M and given up a second if we are going to spend this much on a defensive dman.

I approve of this move. Have always liked his game but he has missed time a lot. Hopefully he can stay healthy.

Pair him with Gio. If he babysat Hughes he can babysit Gio and maybe Gio won't look like he is trying to overdo it all the time.

Even if Gaudreau were traded purely for draft picks, it would still be almost impossible.

By the way, Hall probably signs somewhere within a day.

I think this deal helps solidify just how great of a deal we got for Markstrom. I feel like that was almost a steal.
This is paying a premium. Hope it works out. We need him

Like all of these signings, it'll clearly have to play itself out on the ice but my gut reaction was "Ew." Seems both too long and too rich a contract. My hope had been that some of our newly signed college free agents forces their way onto the team but now? It'd still be great of course, but then we'd just be lamenting this contract.
Sigh, I dunno. The only upside is I totally thought Tanev was way older, seems like he's been in the league forever.

He's an upgrade over Brodie, IMO, and costs less.
Damn, Tre, great start to the off-season.

So, currently we’re looking at:Gio- Tanev
 Hanifin-Andersson
 Valimaki-Kylington

Hmmm... I don’t know enough about Tanev, my buddy who is a Canucks fan is bummed and says he’s really good... we’ll see.

I don't mind this signing.. needed to replace Brodie and Harmonic. He is also loved by Canucks fans and a heart and soul guy. As long as no more veterans are signed, I am good with:
 Giordano-Tanev
 Hanifin-Andersson
 Kylington-Valimaki

..makes me wonder though.. I guess the Flames are out on Hall? Can teams go over the cap during the off-season?

You know what signing Tanev as a free agent proves once and for all?
Treliving made a stupid #%^ing trade when he acquired Hamonic. Guys like him are available every damn season, and while I’m not the biggest fan of this deal - Tanev at 4.5M >>> Hamonic at 3.5M

Canuck fans I know love Tanev.
He's not Hamonic. Tanev can actually play defense and skate.

Tanev is a better defender than Brodie...maybe less potential offence
right handed, same age, little less money

Seems odd to be freaking out over it...especially since Brodie is gone either way
