How so?

The Flames would have to eat part of Ryan's contract plus add the new guy's salary. I don't think there'd be a lot of savings.

I don't think that is accurate. I think there will definitely be interest for Ryan without needing to retain the salary. He is still a serviceable third line player.

So then why not keep Ryan as the 3C?

Someone mentioned Dell as a possibility.

And there are a few teams who need an experience goalie like Rittich. NJ, NYR, Chicago. But that market is pretty limited.

I’ve been a big supporter of the “sign Hall” plan... but I’ll be honest, the boat license story makes me doubt the idea.

Sure, then get rid of Bennett. I would much rather prefer that.

Bennett is 3C.

Bennett is 3C.

Bennett is 3C.

Overpaying a bit on your 4th line centre (Ryan) is not a bad thing. Centre depth is hugely important.

If there are cap reasons to move Ryan, sure - go for it, but otherwise he still contributes to this team as a 4C and PK'er.

We need good depth. The days of deploying 4th lines of Rinaldo and Jankowski need to be over here.

Yeah we might have to hold on to some of the cap, but let’s say we hold back 700k (~2.5 million contract then), he might be attractive to some team looking for veteran presence at center. Obviously not a lot coming back. Might even have to add a sweetener.

Do we get any benefit if we do buy him out?

^Obviously this is if we get Hall. If we don’t have cap issues to solve, I’d rather keep Ryan as a 3C/4C

Lindholm, Dube and Gawdin can also play C.

I would entertain offers for Ryan.

There also might be attractive options in free agency once all the dust settles after the first few days. Where we can sign players to show me contracts or PTOs that can work their way onto the roster.

Much rather give a young guy a chance on the fourth line instead of Ryan or Bennett. A cheaper Gawdin would be perfect imo. He has proven himself in the AHL so give him a legitimate chance. If he doesn't succeed, grab someone on PTO as I am sure there will be plenty this season.

Tyler Johnson being available for free complicates the Ryan situation. Very similar players. TJ a bit more offense and younger, but more money.

I think moving Ryan is necessary if we're playing Bennett at C, even though he is a great player. I am still undecided on the benefit of keeping bennett at this point rather than trying to sell at peak value, but I think management is resolved to try him out full time there.

Wonder what kind of offers toffoli is seeing right now.

Okay sure, but Gawdin is only a year younger than Bennett.

I'm just not sure I see an attainable target who is better and cheaper than Ryan.

Fair enough, but much cheaper.. which I think makes it worth it.

I am not a Bennett fan at all. Regardless of my thoughts around him, I think the Flames should cash in by making him the sweetner in a deal.

I hope to be proven wrong, but I really don't think he is going to continue his momentum from the playoffs into the regular season. If he craps the bed offensively again next year, he will have no value. I am pessimistic and want to trade him while he has decent value this off-season.

Not really. Might help actually. If the Flames just want to rid themselves of the contract, Ryan for future considerations is better than Johnson on a claim. Saves the other team $1.875M and the Flames achieve the need to dump the salary.

The Flames D as it stands right now.

RHD
Andersson
Yelesin
Petrovic

LHD
Giordano
Hanifin
Valimaki
Kyllington
Mackey

So basically the Flames need to sign a 1 legit RHD.
I don't mind Petrovic or Yelesin sharing sheltered 6th D minutes.

If you're moving him to clear cap you're 100% going with a lesser player who earns less. Otherwise you're keeping him around.
