Offering 7 years to Markstrom and having a combined cap hit of 9.5m between 2 goalies would be so Oileresque.

When the Flames have top 5 goal tending everyone will be on board...not to mention Rittich's days will be numbered

No it wouldn't. Oileresque would be taking bottom pair defensemen, and bottom six forwards and paying them like top 4 defensemen and top 6 forwards, eating up all the cap space so there is no depth.

NHL GMs thought he was 4th best. Vancouver would have been in the basement with average goal tending, there is a reason teams are lining up and he is the most sought after.

He should have been 1st for what I've seen. Enemy territory troop reporting in. The guy had Vancouver in a playoff spot and when he got injured they were dropping to lottery territory.

Oh I know, when Markstrom went down they won 3 of 10 games with Demko and were well on their way to falling out until saved by covid.

I need one of Hall or Markstrom to begin to spark some genuine optimism for Jan 1st
I feel like I'm probably setting myself up for defating disappointment but i suppose free agency day is a risky day for us all.

I don't care too much about January 1st.
I'm more concerned with how good the team is in 2022 and beyond.

I'll admit that I didn't watch the games but from Feb onwards it looks like the Canucks were pretty awful all around and Markstrom wasn't really that much better than Demko. Markstrom had 4 wins and 4 losses. Demko had 5 wins and 6 losses. Markstrom was averaging more than 3 goals per games in Feb.

“Defating” sounds like some fad diet.

Flames willing to give another over 30 player a retirement contract. What could possibly go wrong.

I suggest you take a look at who the best players were for the stars this postseason, and their ages.

C'mon man. Don't be so pessimistic! Aim higher!
I need all of Hall, Markstrom and Pietrangelo signed as UFAs and Monahan is next year's #2 Center or at least we have a 1a/1b.
Try that and see how you feel in the morning.

I get that. It doesn’t mean this can’t go south like Neal and Brouwer. I’m not really opposed to signing Markstrom just scared to death that the player breaths a sigh of relief having gotten his contract then can’t get back to the level of play he was at. The Stars goalie was also playing on an expiring contract. I’d rather see a hockey trade for a great goalie with term or a younger goalie. Retirement contracts rarely seem to work out with obvious exceptions

Both things can be true.
Markstrom was great last year, probably top 5 in the league for starters. (Rask, Hellebuyck, Bishop, Lehner, Vasilevsky, Markstrom in some order)
But prior to that he’s been replacement level to slightly above average as a goalie for his career. His stats for his career are worse than guys like Smith, Elliott when we acquired them.
Of starters (2000+ minutes) here’s where he ranks in GSAA the last 5 seasons (all situations).
19/20: 11.45 (6th)
18/19: 4.88 (18th)
17/18: -0.69 (20th)
16/17: -2.04 (36th -1000 or more minutes)
15/16: 0.11 (34th - 1000 or more minutes)
So the risk is it’s not clear if this is actually his level of talent and he finally figured it out, or just a 40 game outlier where he went on a heater. But the problem is since this is his most recent season you’re now paying for his career season that he hadn’t been close to previously.
Not to mean the Flames shouldn’t take a risk, but there is a lot of risk with this contract and it could backfire if they promise 6 years and $6M AAV to him.
He’s not wrong when he says that if Tre signs this contract and it doesn’t work that it’s probably the end of his time as GM of this team.
Edit: I was actually just looking for a good comparison historically for a 30 year old goalie that had a big jump in performance and a decent comparison would have been if we had given Elliott a big extension right after trading for him.
Here were his three seasons in STL right before the trade to Calgary:
13-14: 5.68 (22nd)
14-15: 2.17 (28th)
15-16: 16.84 (2nd)
Looks kind of similar...much like Markstrom is now Elliott was 30 turning 31 when that move happened. Here was his performance after that.
16-17: -5.06
17-18: -4.23
18-19: -2.21
Granted that St.Louis team was a much better defensive team than the Vancouver Canucks were...but something to think about.

We’ve had so many miss that we have to hit at some point... right? Right? Ugh I hope so. Looking at the cap friendly buyouts make me sad.
