Mike is at the bank with duffle bags of his bonus money. He’s heading back to Holland’s office tomorrow with empty ones.

With some of the glorified gossip revolving around Markstrom and the Oilers, I wonder if him spending 6 weeks in Edmonton (despite being in bubble life) and seeing what the arena has to offer the Oilers players really made him think this is a place he could live and raise his family.
|
This is the level of delusion down at the oilers boards. I live in Edmonton region and can confidently say that anyone who was in the bubble got the worst view of Edmonton imaginable- the area surrounding rogers is a mess of poorly planned construction, bountiful amounts of the city's most needy citizens, civil services, the central courthouse and old remand, and Edmonton architectural marvels like the bibliotank. No chance at all that any player came away with a positive impression of life in the city.

For what it's worth, I heard from someone who knows some of the Canuck players that Markstrom is a bit of a home body. If there is one player that doesn't care about big city lights, it's him. He's all about training and personal hobbies apparently.
Arena facilities could be something that a player like him really considers.

Will be funny if being locked up in edmontons core for two months is ultimately what turns Markstrom off of them.
That would be enough exposure to turn most people off. Short one game trips through can at least help them maintain a decent image.

Oilers brass were probably hoping the bubble would act like a sort of Stockholm Syndrome.

This is the most St. Albert take on the bubble I have ever heard, including the damning assessment of downtown. So not surprised

C'mon, you can't even see the river valley from the JW. They were looking at wasteland and weren't able to walk out of their little prison camp among the construction barriers of what was supposed to be the ice district... Imagine if your room was on the north side of the building? Premium overlook towards 118th ave. Wonderous.
The university area is the jewel of the city, and I actually like living here. But the players got to see the worst parts and were confined there.

Hopefully the hobbies include hikes in the mountains. Down to the Flames and Avs

Disagree on them being confined to the worst part. MacCauley all the way to Clareview, Millwoods, and anything else north of the Yellowhead would have instantly been worse.
Downtown isn't beautiful, but then again the Ice District isn't finished, COVID kept the otherwise great 104th Street muted, and there is an uptick in social disorder in Alberta in general.
The VGK players were constantly buying pizza of the local folks in need at Boyle Street community services. It's not like they all stuck their noses up high at these folks, even though most Edmontonians (and surrounding community members) tend to do when they come downtown.

What? You mean they werent enamoured with the baffling Soviet-Era Architecture?
Why did you think they made Edmonton 'The Bubble?'

Funny enough, the site this photo is taken from is one of my favourites in the city, and is actually a glorious place to take in a sunset while consuming your favourite beverage/ smokable product. That location actually shows Edmonton's good side, if you pan the photo out a bit you get sweeping river valley and many bridges.
There's a very good reason all of the pictures of Rogers place you see are facing south towards the ice district.
This is what bubble players were looking at to the north and east (I took the liberty of circling Edmonton's primary crack/hooker district for the less informed):

Well, now if anyone needs crack-whores in Edmonton they know where to go.
Is that a Public Service? Who am I to say?

Gregor doing comparisons with Koskinen with all the FA goalies available. Justifying they're happy with what they have.
Here's the comparison with Koskinen and a Vezina caliber goalie

So... Koskinen was 5th in Vezina voting? Embarrassing...I am not sure koskinnen would get a backup offer today on the FA market...

He wasn’t 5th. That was Elvis M, followed by Lehner in 6th. Am I missing something?
