No "big name" "traded for" goalie has won a Stanley Cup basically since the lock out. None. 16 years or more? Want me to post the break down ....again???
This string is about speculation. I'll speculate right back at all of you who want to shell out for a "big name" goalie. Its a lot of money for stop gap. Talbots as good as any stop gap mentor for young Goalies and cheaper. I don't want a plugged nickle spent on washed up Holtby, washed up Fluery or Markstrom even if he is playing well.

Your facts are correct, but to suggest that a traded for goalie cannot win the cup based on those 16 years isn’t conclusive to me. A number have gone to the final, and I don’t think the deciding factor was whether the goalie was traded for or not.
I certainly won’t base me decision on whether to sign a UFA goalie on this fact.
It’s more likely simply a coincidence or a small sample size.

Holtby is from Llyodminster why would he be so opposed to moving back to where he is from?

14 straight years is NOT a co-incidence OR a "small sample size". Ask Warrener how much fun getting to a final and losing is. All Cup Champs are at least 50% home grown players by the winning team and for whatever reason the goalies are ALWAYS part of that important foundation group all cup champs have in common.

Because he has lived most of his adult live on the east coast.
I may be from the east coast, but my home is now Calgary and I would never move back.

This off season is starting to feel like a major bust. Lots of talk, but no action. It's beginning to feel like Hall's interest is in winning, and that doesn't put Calgary high on anyone's list. Markstrom is likely using the Flames to up his value elsewhere. Again, why Calgary for Markstrom? I get the feeling that Treliving is looking for the big bucks and missing out some smaller game that may be easier and cheaper to pick up. We'll probably see a bunch of third tier signings and be regaled with stories about how close we were to getting the big one that got away.

It's looking like we'll have a pretty similar roster going into next season. I've been hoping for a major shakeup or retool since halfway through game 6 against Dallas

It’s pretty much all speculation until teams make salary offers and the players decide where they’re going.
Pretty difficult to ascertain right now.

... free agency hasn't even started and you're resigned to the "fact" we will have the same lineup next season?

I expect the trades will depend on our acquisition(s) during FA.

I think we'll see some movement today (cap moves) in anticipation for Free Agency tomorrow. The draft was a too hectic this year for major activity.

Which teams in the East are lining up to give him a starters job?

I guess setting your expectations low is one way to go. It is not like there has been an insane amount of movement or trades and the Flames have done nothing.
Why for Markstrom? The team has had a revolving door of goalies every 1-2 years since Kipper left and they are about done with that is my thoughts. If you can go from okay goaltending to a guy that was considered 4th best in the league last year then why not?

Trading ‘season’ doesn’t even really begin until tomorrow.
Many here need to just take a deep breath today.

Reading through twitter Oilers fans are hoping for Markstrom, Hall and Barrie. Similar to what is being rumored down here.

I think if the Bruins miss out on OEL and Krug walks then they will be in the mix for Hanifin.

Ya, especially without the usual week of being able to talk to the players before free agency. Just so much unknown

Not sure if we've gone over this, but someone has done the math on reddit and there is currently a 97 million dollar shortfall between what current RFAs and UFAs made last year and the available cap space all teams in the NHL currently have.
There are going to be some pretty good bargain contracts come November.

Honestly this is probably the best case scenario for the Flames. Let Tre go big game hunting, miss out, and be forced to pick up bargain deals in December when veterans who can help will be had for pennies on the dollar.
The only things worth buying in free agency is elite talent (Hall, Markstrom, Pietrangelo) and discounted value assets.
Stay clear from any “Tier 2” free agents.

Isn't this what fans have been complaining about for years now though?
Tre hunting for big game, missing out on the premier "star" acquisitions and then going out and getting the "runner up" or "grizzled" vets to help push our window another year.
Troy Brouwer
James Neal
UFA's have been a crutch in his tenor as GM.
The Lidholm trade being the highlight.
Hamonic another low point.
If we cant get one of the big fish this year, I'd rather we don't do anything then blow contracts on "next guy up" roster spots and just let our young guys play. We're clearly not going to win a cup with the current roster, so lets not mortgage our future on depth and old vets.
Go big or go home, make some big trades (Johnny) if you're going after a big UFA but don't just go out and get something just because.
I'm slowly starting to fear we keep the same core yet again, and likely don't get any big UFA's and hand out some more of those Brouwer/Neal contracts in hopes we can hit the 2nd round for a change. Or worse we give Markstrom the big 6x6 and nothing else and then realize goaltending didn't cost us the playoffs, it was our top forward not playing like top forwards.
It's going to suck when we lose Johnny for nothing 2 years from now, hope I'm wrong but this feels like were chasing this cup with a core that has proven it just cant get it done.
