I said this in the last trade thread, but I don’t see what makes Markstrom that much more preferable to Holtby - I’m good if we end up with either, but Holtby is an absolute stud.

No doubt Holtby has accomplished much more, but I think right now it's about the trendline. Holty has had a rough couple of years by his standards, whereas Markstrom's stock is very much on the rise.
Holtby could be a real bargain if he bounces back, but given recent performance, how likely is that to happen?
I'm nervous about a big, long-term contract for Markstrom, but I'm probably even more nervous about Holtby coming in and having to be that true #1 that's eluded the team for so many years now. Markstrom appears to be at that level right now. Holtby not so much.
I think that's part of the difference right now.

To gauge how much we have to spend.
We currently have 16.9m in cap space.
Mangiapane will probably get 2.25-2.75m
Kylington will probably get 0.8-1.0m
Let's be conservative and say that leaves us with 13m in cap space to fill out the roster. Which is 3 or 4 forwards, 2 defensemen and a goalie.
Now let's say we move Ryan and are able to fill the entire 4th line with his salary and let's say we only go with 13 forwards instead of 14, and let's assume we sign a 7th D for 750k, we're left with 12.25m
That leaves us with 12.25 million in cap space and the following roster (people/spaces can move around, lines are just a general idea):
Gaudreau - Monahan - Lindholm
Tkachuk - Backlund - Mangiapane
Lucic - Bennett - Dube
1m UFA - 1.25m UFA - 1m UFA
_______
Giordano - _______
Hanifin - Andersson
Valimaki - Kylington
0.75m UFA
_______
Rittich
I look at that and think we can do Barrie, Markstrom and forwards at about 1m, or Hall, Talbot and about 3m for a defenseman.

I imagine it’s a pretty fluid situation.
If we sign Hall, Johnny will be traded for a Defenceman (RHD?).
Markstrom will be signed, or we’ll sign Holtby, or we’ll sign Talbot.
If Hall is not signed, Johnny won’t be traded, therefore we’ll have to head to free agency for our defensive needs.
And then there’s also whatever happens with Noah, who I still think will be dealt. Thinking out loud, we’ve been linked to Columbus - if we sign Hall and Markstrom, is there a deal to be made around Hanifin + Gaudreau for Jones + someone (Bjorkstrand?). I had previously thought Jones would be untouchable, but I’m not so sure. Very similar situation to Johnny with only two years of team control left.
Gaudreau + Hanifin + Ryan for Jones + Bjorkstrand + Wennberg ($1.9M+ retained on Wennberg as it sounds like they’re buying him out if they can’t trade him)
I’m really hoping most of the action happens Friday/Saturday.

Why would anyone want the goalie who was terrible last season above the goalie who was one of the best...it boggles the mind
Holtby will be a DISASTER wherever he goes IMO...He had an .897 save percentage and 3.11 GAA on a top team!

Nobody is going to be taking Ryan off our hands without sending salary back. This is an offseason unlike any other. Owners are looking at losing tens of millions of dollars.

I guess but guys like Ryan clearly still have value. Bonino and a 2nd just fetched Kunin in a trade.

Someone literally just took Olli Maatta at $3,333,225 for 2 years. So why do you think it is impossible to think someone would take Ryan for less money and less AAV, when Ryan is a considerably more useful player?

A veteran centre on a cheap expiring contract isn’t appealing?

We can probably get Holtby on a shorter deal than Markstrom and limit some risk there. I don’t like goalies on long term deals like 5-7 years. Too many prove to eventually have a performance swing in the wrong direction after a couple/few years and then you’re in a bind with lots of $ at the goalie position.
If you can’t luck into a stud through the draft you really have to find the next guy on the upswing from another team, or squeeze a couple good years out of a vet to tide you over.
Not opposed to giving Talbot another 2 though since team is still 2-3 years min from going deep and by that point you want your #1 to be peaking. Markstrom is peaking now.

Yeah Ryan is a good player but he's underused here. Especially in the playoffs. Kind of defeats the purpose of paying 3M for him.
If moving him helps to facilitate these signings that will play on the top line or starter duty then its warranted.

I don’t see any GM making a bunch of signings that will force him to have to dump much salary before the start of the season. In this market, that could be suicide.

Holtby has 3 bad regular seasons in a row on a top team who no longer wants him
Markstrom carried his poor team to a playoff spot and beat the defending champs standing on his head. He is by far the biggest name on the market
Not a tough choice for me

I doubt Arizona gave other teams permission to talk to Hall early seeing as they were trying to trade his negotiating rights. So this is most likely bull####... or tampering.

But cap space and age are important things. Holtby/Talbot = Probably cheap, probably serviceable, probably short term. I can't see Markstrom getting a deal work less than $25 million for his 1 good season.
Winning cups with free agent goalies? That's not a thing. I believe it's been over 40 years since an NHL free agent goalie has won a cup. I went back to 1970 and couldn't find a single example.

Obviously not the same circumstance you're referring to, but technically Tim Thomas was a free agent signee by the Bruins.

That’s technically true. That’s why I said NHL free agent - Thomas hadnt played any prior NHL games. Same goes for Niemi who was never drafted, but signed like Rittich.

I doubt that Holtby wants to move west, unless he has no other attractive choice.
We know Markstrom will come to Calgary.
That may be the difference.
