Default Jankowski wants a fresh start

Good luck Mark

Pat Steinberg @Fan960Steinberg
#Flames GM Brad Treliving says they talked to Mark Jankowski’s camp about signing him to a deal lower than his qualifying number at $1.75 million.

Says there was a desire from Jankowski’s camp to get a fresh start and a change of scenery.

Eric Francis @EricFrancis
Treliving said he tried to work with Jankowski's agent on a potential deal at a lower price than his QO would have to be, but the player's rep spoke of the merits of a fresh start. So, they part ways.

News Update

okay this changes the narrative a bit. The first tweets made it sound like that Jankowski wasn't willing to work with the Flames at all but looks like both sides tried

Pat Steinberg @Fan960Steinberg
Treliving clarified with us both sides discussed signing a deal different than Jankowski’s qualifying number. Said there was a mutual feeling parting ways was the best option.

Treliving says “never say never” but expects Jankowski to enter the free agent market. #Flames

Well, Eastern Europe is definitely a change of scenery.

Vancouver?

What a waste of a pick.

He'll get a better opportunity elsewhere, good luck to him.

After his usage in the postseason and sitting in favor of Rinaldo, I'd want a change of scenery too. He might not be a suitable top 9 player, but he is absolutely an everyday player that can help a team win.

I'm going to predict that he gets a fresh start somewhere with a new fire lit into him and gets off to a hot start. I also predict he fizzles out and returns to his melancholy ways and winds up drifting off into the obscure within a few years.

He could be a 4th liner on basically any team in the league because of his PK ability alone.

I was glad to hear Treliving tried to work something out. I like Jankowski and wish him well. Listening to Nault - what an idiot, the quality of analysis (with our media) is just brutal - this is an NHL city!

Players need opportunity. If the ice time is not there it's hard to produce let alone grow production YoY. Obviously you control your ice time with play but his role changed (3C to 4C).

Did he struggle? Obviously but you don't lose ability in your 20s. It's mental and has to do with opportunity. He didn't have a great year but players bounce back - I like his skillset.

I know most will be happy to cut ties but not me. I'm obviously no expert but Janko is a cerebral player (he's what he is - middle six player so I'm not exaggerating his abilities) and I'm thinking the team wants some more jam from 4C.

Best of luck Janko!

Could go somewhere like Ottawa or Detroit, who have a lot of space on their rosters.

I always pictured him playing for the Sabres. I think he grew up a fan and his dad works in the organization

29th in goals in his draft year
50th or so in points.

Which isn’t a terrible result for a 21st pick.

The real problem was the trade down went over a lot of players who were better then him for a really odd second round pick.

Giergurson
Cici
Wilson
Hertz
Teruaveinan
Vasilevski
Laughton

Every single one of those players played more NHL games (Janko did go to college though so had a later start)

I think at the time people want Teruveinan or Matta after we traded down. I’m not sure that Matta would have been significantly better but taking Teruveinan certainly would have.

The Flames wanted to be the smartest person in the room, they were not. I believe I liked the pick at the time and it certainly wasn’t a disaster.

It also created one of the funniest posts in CP where a person was ranting about how terrible the Jankowski pick was after selecting him in the poll of who he thought the flames should take.

His uncle worked for the Sabres. He was just hired by the Coyotes.

Is Jankowski an NHLer? Sure. Will he play on another team? Almost certainly.

Does he move the needle vs any other random 4th liner? Not at all.

Was rooting for him, but it's time to move on.

Understandable. Best of luck to him, think he can still be a decent contributor somewhere
