Two years??
Doesn't that take him to unrestricted free agency?

Appears to take him directly to UFA

AAV is decent, but they get no UFA years. Bit of a weird contract, if this happens.

You'd think Columbus would be more afraid of free agency after all they've been through.

Does Jarmo strike you as a guy who’s afraid of anything?
He traded all his picks when they were on a the cusp of playoffs and then used his first on Chinakhov, an overeager ranked in the 200’s
The guy fears nothing

Also passed on consensus pick and countryman Puljujarvi.
Definitely fearless. One of my favourite GMs in the league at the moment.

True, but something made him afraid of picking a fellow Finn, Jesse Puljujärvi.
And whatever it was, he was right.
Either that or he really just liked Dubois.

I wonder if from Domi's end the 2 year deal to UFA was all he's willing to go for regardless of which team he was on.
Get paid well enough now, bank on the world being more back to normal and the league spending again in a couple years and he really gets paid.

No wonder Domi had such low trade value. I would think at that AAV you would get a 4-6 year term. Bought no UFA years and paid market value

Domi is not a $5M player. Massive blunder by the Bluejackets.

I think too many fans are to hung up on term and UFA years vs projected player production.
Realistically Domi will likely produce better in the next two years than he will in any year after that. So why drive up today's price to buy a future where history suggests the player may not be as productive?
More Hockey teams would be wise to look at Baseball where the schrewd teams rely heavily on cost controlled pre-arbitration guys and older free agents on shorter term contracts. Before this CBA the 27 to 30 year old player was highly sought after because they were mature and still had RFA years until they could get paid higher. Today, that's honestly an age group where you run the risk of overpaying today, and also having a future years that hurt you on the contract. Unless it's a premium asset...teams should be more willling to walk away from these players, especially forwards as they tend to peak at a younger age.
