This draft is just that deep this year.
Cozens (Feb 9, 01) 51 gms, 38G, 47A, 85Pts
Zary.. (Sep 25, 01) 57 gms, 38G, 48A, 86Pts

Yep. Strength of the draft was a real thing this year, and the Flames absolutely nailed it.

I think it was after they picked. It was shown as Sportsnet was cutting to commercial.

Bo Horvat had a safe projection as a defensively responsible second line center.

Bo Horvat was ranked right around where Zary was but this is a deeper draft.

Bo Horvat (they thought) may not be a big point producer at the highest level, since his defensive ability is even better.

Career Projection - He has the upside to be a top-line center but the safe projection is probably an above average second line center.

Long-term he projects as an ideal third-line center in the NHL. Horvat could find himself on a team’s top six -- as the sandpaper on an offensively-gifted line.
I don't know much about Zary, but with Horvat a lot of his "downside" was generated by sub-par NHL level skating. Horvat surpassed almost all expectations by turning his biggest weaknesses into a strength

So does Zary get a training camp invite?

I realize there's a compressed off-season so likely no rookie camp.

I'd be stunned if he's not at camp. Pelletier was last year and Valimaki was before him.

Scores a beautiful goal for the hat trick then skates by the Victoria bench and counts his goals on his fingers. I love this guy already.

Damn...it's times like this when I wished I picked up a #18 James Neal Calgary Jersey when they were being cleared out! Nice easy name swap....

After watching these Connor Zary videos I'm starting to see some Mike Peca with a touch of Trevor Linden.

From AC's post of the highlights (i highly recommend watching...not just goals but clips of him checking and generating scoring chances), he and JP were together a decent amount.

This should put a fine end to people calling others Tree apologists. This was absolute wizardry.

I dont care if he makes the odd free agent f up or didn't acquire an $8M goalie when he's fleecing people like this in the middle of a draft.

I have thought some more on it and still like the move. Trading back in the draft is not some ingenious move. And when it happens, teams almost always tell you they got their man anyway. You are essentially betting on your scouting department, who are seeing things slightly different than the teams around them. You hope you can parlay that into some extra picks.

But ultimately what’s important is getting that first round pick correct. Because it doesn’t matter how many 3rd rounders you gain if you blow your first round selection. And so I can look at lists made by other people and conclude Flames made a good pick, but who knows. Other teams have those lists and their own too. You can only wait and see.

But seems like Treliving did well in gaining the second 3rd round pick. Dropping g from 19 to 24 should be worth at least a 3rd rounder and maybe a little more. Getting two 3rd rounders seems like good value to me.

Not it’s about developing Zary. This team needs him to be an NHLer.

Zary was a force at those U18s. 4 goals and 7 points in 7 games. Pelletier didn't have nearly as much success, just 2 assists. Guys have bad stretches though.

-skating appears to be noticeably better in the 19-20 video than in the 18-19 video

Ummm you have watched Elias play in the playoffs the past 2 seasons right?

So I'll take a Regular Season Lindholm and a Playoff Bennett.
