Wheeler had Zary at 13 and Pronman at 11...

so he did slide a bit, and it might be due to skating concerns... but Calgary got him at 24 which is pretty incredible value imo...

it's something he'll need to work on, but he isn't the first player that was deemed an average skater that improved by the time he got to the NHL

This is a truly underrated joke. Well played.

By definition, there are a lot of "average" skaters in the NHL.

Puck skills, HIQ, and competitiveness are more important factors, unless you're talking about a player with really elite skating.

based on their scouting, they saw his skating as 'average', that's their assessment, not mine.

Still didn't prevent them from putting Zary 11th and 13th... so their assessment didn't scare them off from ranking him highly.

if his skating was elite, he would have been a top 10-15 pick

You do know even in a deep draft 75% of these players won't play in the NHL. If we end up getting a middle six player at 24 that is a home run.

In case anyone hasn't posted it yet, it was #20 - King, for Uncle Ken.
Made me pretty happy.

If you think you are getting first rounders at the end of the 1st round you have no idea on the odds of the draft

If you can constantly product 2nd line talent in the late 1st you are laughing

100% of 1st round picks are 1st round picks. #Facts

Doing the anti-oilers thing cant be the wrong move here. You know, rather than making HOF comparisons off of junior or farm team level play.

Also consider how the Flames dubbed Bennett a future #1C savior coming out of that draft and how that worked out.

It gives the guy room to actually exceed the bar, rather than scratch and claw to come anywhere near it.

I think it shows they've learned from others' and their own past mistakes.

I would focus on those ROR and Lindholm comparisons if you're looking for hype.

End of the day he was still drafted 8-12 spots below his projection so it takes some mental backflips to say it was poor value.

That's not correct. 2003 was a deep draft. 75% of the players drafted in the first round of that draft not only played in the NHL, but were impact players. I hope Zary is an impact player for us.

I'm talking about the entire draft class, not just the first round.

Good play by Treliving. Pick the player you like and pick up a few 3rds in the process. If Treliving can parlay a pick or 2 or a piece to acquire NHL ready help tomorrow, then that would have to be considered a successful draft.

Pat Steinberg @Fan960Steinberg
#Flames GM Brad Treliving with us on trading down from 19 to 22 and eventually to 24:

“Connor (Zary) was a guy we were targeting. He was in a group of guys because if you move down you have to have options. We can use the age-old line: we can’t believe he was there”.
